Michael Appleton
BLACKBURN Rovers have been given permission to speak to Blackpool boss Michael Appleton about the vacant role at Ewood Park.
It is understood the Seasiders are resigned to losing the former Portsmouth boss and are already planning for their next manager, having only appointed Appleton two months ago.
Rovers have confirmed talks will take place tomorrow.

The only thing he is experienced in is dealing with shambolic owners at Portsmouth & not being able to deal with the Oystons at Blackpool.
Well done Shebby, pat yourself on the back, you have found a famous, well respected experienced manager.

What is going on at Ewood isn't his fault.
It does look like things are changing behind the scenes, Shebby is as silent as the grave which is a massive bonus, Shaw and Agnew are about as popular as rabies, but at least they know something about football in this country, and that might, just might mean that Venky's are actually listening for once.

Blackpool, reading between the lines will not be too un happy loosing this man only in the job with them a fews months with no loyalty what so ever and already wants to move on. So much for his remarks about Blackpool when joining them quote 'joining a club with ambition' - pity he doesnt think the same way - yes will be a poor appointment!!!!!!!!!

1 - He's worked under RH and R DiM - two great people to learn from.
2 - He's worked at Pompy so he's just about the most experienced young manager who's worked at a club that is imploding.
3 - He did a good job at Pompey whilst having to sell ALL of his players (don't just look at his win/lose ratio - thats too simplistic - look how Pompys results have now totally collapsed since he has left.
4 - His results at Blackpool havnt been great but 12 games is too low a number to statistically see how he is (turn 2 of them draws into wins and he'd have done quite well - thats why 12 is too low a number to judge him on).
5 - Rovers are losing £2m per month, we need a manager who can get reasonably good results whilst continually losing his best and most experienced players - THIS IS WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN at BRFC over the next 12 months - get used to it - he has experience at handling this type of situation at Pompy.
6 - To all those (majority) who are moaning about his appointment - who else would take the job ?
Pep G ? - I know he said he was ready to resume work but I don't think he had East Lancs in mind !
Mark Hughes - Has given no indication about wanting the job. Would MH really put up with the Venkys and SS ?
Billy Davies - Personally I thought he would be great but most on here didnt want him either.
Phil Brown - Have they really let this guy out on day release from the loony bin ?
Peter Taylor - Please God no !
OGS - Why would he work for the "Loones from Pune" when he can have his pick of jobs ?
Karl Robinson - Most Rovers fans don't want him because of his "lack of experience".
Sean O'Driscol - would have probably been a good shout but most on here would say he "wasnt a big enough name to manage us".
If MA gets the job then us fans have to give him the benefit of the doubt and get fully behind him - we need him here for the medium/longterm - 5 managers in 5 months is bordering on the ridiculous !

He then worked under Di Matteo at WBA and was caretaker until Hodgson came in after di matteo left.
Hodgson wanted to keep Appleton at West Brom but he wanted to be his own man and took on the massive job at Pompey which he won in-front of the likes of Sean O'Driscoll and Steve Coppel.
He looks tough and probably will be tough - but fair - and he doesn't like being lied to - which is why he walked at Blackpool. He has had to work under several changes of owners at Fratton Park (including the Russian Mafia) so I am sure he can cope with anything that these clowns throw at him.

3 - Bowyer has the job until end of January.
4 - we now want Appleton.

From Blackpool Gazette tonight:
BLACKPOOL have given Michael Appleton permission to talk to Blackburn over their vacant manager’s job.
The 37-year-old has only spent two months in the Bloomfield Road hotseat after taking over from Ian Holloway in November.
Rovers made an official approach for Appleton last night, which was inititally turned down by Pool chairman Karl Oyston.
The manager didn’t take training on Thursday morning, and Rovers chief Derek Shaw confirmed the two clubs were talking over a compensation package this afternoon.
And Blackpool confirmed a deal had been done on Thursday evening, with Appleton travelling to east Lancashire to talk to Rovers about a deal.
Appleton has been away from Bloomfield Road this week – his first break since taking over from Ian Holloway on November 7. Pool’s players were given Monday and yesterday off after a tough festive period. The manager was also absent on Tuesday, though that day off was planned in advance.
It’s a familiar story for Seasiders fans, who were faced with similar speculation about previous boss Holloway before his exit for Crystal Palace.
Appleton is yet to speak to Blackburn, though it remains to be seen whether the chance to move to a club with a much bigger budget will tempt the 37-year-old.
The manager stated last week that he wanted “four or five” new signings ahead of this Saturday’s game at Charlton. But despite having a bid accepted for Barnsley right-back Scott Wiseman, Pool could not agree personal terms and are yet to have any joy in the January transfer market.
The Gazette understands the relationship between manager and chairman is fine, though there is no doubt that Appleton’s frustrations over the lack of transfer activity are growing.
Shaw is believed to be behind Rovers’ interest in Appleton, he knows the Pool boss from their time at Preston North End and thinks he’d be an ideal candidate to take the club forward.
He is on a rolling contract similar to what previous boss Holloway was signed to and Rovers would need to pay one year’s salary to Blackpool as compensation.
Should either party want to push through a move today, it would take an improved offer by Rovers, or Appleton to quit his job.
Rovers won three out of three under caretaker boss Gary Bowyer since Henning Berg was sacked two weeks ago.
Appleton was not at Pool’s Squires Gate training ground this morning, assistant Steve Thompson took training.
He has won two and lost two of 12 games since taking the reins at Bloomfield Road. His most recent victory was a 2-0 home triumph over Blackburn on December 15.
That result was Rovers’ fourth defeat in five matches and a 2-0 reverse in their next outing at Middlesbrough cost Berg his job after 10 games at the helm.

Does this mean that Appleton was desperate to get out of Pompey (and who can blame him, he'd done a tough shift) and didn't really bother asking questions about the situation at 'Pool ? Not a good omen.
But twelve games later, he's seen the light and things are so dire at 'Pool that moving to the most dysfunctional and risible club in England is an attractive offer ?
Surely he cannot believe what I anticipate will be the PR statements tomorrow that he can turn things round, new chapter, get this once great club back it belongs etc ?
I reckon he's here for his expertise in preventing absolute mayhem on the field in a club heading for ruin.
Perhaps after 12 games he'll work out that Brum are in a worse position but could make a better offer and he'll move on there.
The club is now run by people who are eager to move on.

He has the same record as Hennng Berg ,both took over from managers and both could win only 1 game(Rovers handed Blackpool the other win ).
So much for an experience manager ,plenty experience in losing games.
Don't come with all that crap he was at a bankrupt club like Portsmouth and did a good job ,it was the players there who did it all he had no choice as he had no players to pick from .
Can't believe how people keep saying berg did not get enough time ,how much time did Boywer have to prepare for 3 wins out of 3 .Maybe it was a fluke but when was the last time Rovers had a 3 match fluke?
Boywer was promissed till the end of January to be in charge ,what a stab in the back for the guy ,at least they got a guy with now with no princeples
Look at the guys pathetic record ,Oyston be laughing all the way to the bank getting easy money.
All these so called fans asking to give the guy a chance ,what happenend to the so called experienced manager ,why can't they keep there word and wait ,i know if they wait till the they have no time to buy anyone but this guy will not do the business .
Time to pack in going down with these owners in charge and there so called assistants.

Maybe the owners and the board are turning the corner, making better decisions. Lets hope thats the case because if most people got their way and Venky's walked away we would be finished. There would be no more BRFC. Lets get behind the manager and aid his success.

I will still support the manager if he only wins 2 out of his first 12 games at Ewood. A manager needs a lot more than 12 games to get a club working his own way. However, the spirit of the squad and with the players being on a high gives the new manager a better start than a majority of others out there. Bowyer will still be in charge for the Wolves game and I fancy us there then hand the reigns over to the new man. For me Bowyer would ideally go back to reserve team manager.

i think most rovers supporters' anger is the whole shambolic way the club is being run...it is truly pathetic and the squabbling between charlie careoli and tweedle dee and dum is like in the godfather where the sons are fighting for approval to be the annointed one before don corleone chooses michael.
for those who think that there are the first glimmers of light that rovers board and owners are starting to make sensible decisons - history doesn't back that up - its the old one of - if they fell into a barrel of t.its they would come up sucking their thumbs.

•Sept 2012: Kean resigns as manager after club is relegated in May
•Oct 2012: Henning Berg appointed and sacked within 57 days with club 17th in Championship
The approach for Blackpool manager Michael Appleton on Wednesday was, according to those close to the club, another example of a club lacking cohesion, clarity of thought and unity. Nothing is what it seems, confusion reigns and the divisions in the boardroom continue to undermine any hopes of finding success on the field.
On 3 January, Blackburn released a statement confirming caretaker manager Gary Bowyer had been placed in charge of the club until at least the end of January. On 9 January, Blackburn released a statement confirming they had made a formal approach for Appleton, which has now been accepted .
Bowyer was not contacted by the club to inform him of the development and found out just minutes before the news went public. Having led the club to three successive victories for the first time since September 2008 and restored harmony to a dressing room previously riven by cliques, Bowyer might have been surprised.
"I do feel for Gary Bowyer," Garner added. "He was given a guarantee and then for the club to be approaching another a manager a few days later is incredible. But it doesn't matter who you bring in, Venky's are in India and don't have a clue what they are doing day-to-day."
Blackburn's global advisor Shebby Singh knew nothing of the approach for Appleton. The man Venky's tasked with running the club on their behalf was left out of the loop on the issue, leaving his future role unclear. Three key board members are split into two clear factions with operations director Paul Agnew and managing director Derek Shaw on one side, and Singh on the other.
Hardly a word has been exchanged between Agnew and Shaw and the club's global advisor since the turn of the year. On New Year's Eve, one faction watched the victory over Nottingham Forest from the directors' box, while Singh opted to watch the match from a private box.
None of the three men wanted to comment when approached by the BBC.
There has been tension between the parties for some time, dating back to Singh's arrival and the subsequent dismissal of manager Steve Kean. On 28 December, Shaw and Agnew flew to India to hold talks with Venky's in Pune. Both men voiced their concerns about a range of issues, including the role of Singh, and pushed to see an experienced manager appointed after Henning Berg's failure.
Michael Appleton - the manager
•Took charge of West Brom for one game in February 2011
•Appointed Portsmouth boss in November 2011
•Pompey record - P51 W13 D11 L27
•Appointed Blackpool boss November 2012
•Blackpool record - P12 W2 D8 L2
A club source claimed Agnew and Shaw had in fact been summoned to India by the owners and that their own positions could even be in doubt. Not for the first time, confusion reigned.
The divisions in the Ewood boardroom were also a key factor in the prolonged search to replace Kean. Shaw and Agnew met with Blackpool manager Ian Holloway, while Singh pursued Tim Sherwood.
When Berg was presented as manager, Shaw was quick to insist the appointment had been Singh's and Singh's alone. History will show, it was to prove a damaging and expensive mistake for Rovers. But with the club winning matches and the players happy with the leadership of Bowyer, the ripples are back.
On Thursday, Blackburn Rovers Action Group released a statement. "Internal power struggles have become far more important ," it read.
"While one man has tried to pull the club off the floor others in the board room have turned the club into a national laughing stock by undermining him… personality clashes are being prioritised over the best interests of the football club, it appears contradictory messages and statements add to the pantomime."
What Blackburn fans will find hardest to fathom is why the club is back in the news for the wrong reasons, just as matters on the field have, for the first time this season, settled down.
The players have enjoyed life under Bowyer and a number of them are understood to have expressed their anger at the way the caretaker manager has been treated when informed of the club's latest manoeuvrings on Thursday. The misinformation and confused statements, committing to Bowyer one day before approaching another manager six days later, have left staff, players and fans bewildered.
"As a player you just try to keep your head down and ignore what is happening off the field but it isn't easy with the club making the wrong sort of headlines time and time again," Garner said. "Is Michael Appleton the right man for the job? I don't know. But I have been on the internet today and I see he has a worse win percentage than Steve Kean and he is not the experienced name the fans want so he is on a hiding to nothing from the start."
There are suggestions the power struggle is coming to an end. Now the hope from the supporters is a return to harmony on and off the field, whoever is left standing at the end of the battle. Venky's have risked much to bankroll a push for an immediate return to the Premier League. Kean was allowed to invest more than £15m in transfer fees during the summer, paying a club record fee for Jordan Rhodes.
Failure to get back to the top flight at the first time of asking would increase the financial pressure on the club. Another battle looms and it is one Blackburn could do without. The club badge may hold the answer, at the base of it lie the words 'arte et labore' - by skill and by labour.
The hard work begins now.

The players obviously had respect for, and were playing for GB. They will be dumbfounded at this appointment, and it could destroy morale and confidence among the players, at a crucial part of the season.
I'd rather they stuck with GB, than take a chance on this fella.

Why would the club have contacted Bowyer first? Bowyer is the caretaker manager, a temp.
Personally I would have given Bowyer the job until the end of the season and reviewed the situation then. However thousands of so called fans would not have accepted that and although results were going our way he would not be a big enough name. Just like in the Blues Bar after the game on Saturday, after a convincing win, fans were commenting that we went about it the wrong way, we were playing flicks here and there and just knocking the ball about and we have no right to do that when the club is in disarray.
We have a lot of fans that need a reality check at Ewood. A majority being the post 1992 brigade. Try to enjoy when we win and more importantly try to actually support the team and get behind the lads wearing our famous blue and white halves.

I too would have stuck with Bowyer but reading various message boards not many other 'fans' would have been suited to that decision and as soon as we started to drop points the usual suspects would have turned on him.

Just as with Kean with a 28% win ratio we got relegated. There is nothing Bollax about simple maths, I take it maths wasn't your strongest subject?
So as appleton has a 23% win ratio which is worse than Keans 28% and we went down, guess what my next sentence is?

At Pompey, it was Mission Impossible so nobody can really give a fair assessment of his ability to manage, coach and steer a club.
It might even be another Mission Impossible if the in-fighting in the 'corridors of power' at Ewood continue and he isn't given any proper support or backing.
I'm actually surprised anyone at all has stepped forward to take on this task, so good luck to him.
I'd now like some stability at the club, no more dramas for a while and for everyone to concentrate on the football for a change, but as we are in our 3rd year of turmoil and unrest I think that may yet be a tad optimistic.

For Appleton to have lost ony 27 out of 51 at Portsmouth with a team of YTS lads and players who weren't being paid obviously shows some ability.
In real terms, the 23% ratio is probably higher than Moyes'.

Appleton has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal, worth up to £500,000-a-year, to become Blackburn’s new manager as the boardroom divisions at Ewood Park were finally solved on Thursday night. So much for the short term contract that was supposedly going to be on offer. I have said it before and I'll say it again they used to be indecisive down at Ewood but now they are not so sure. One thing is for sure though we need to get behind Appleton. The moaning needs to stop. Any protests at all should be aimed at the Hierarchy. We need to get behind the manager and players 100%

From the disgusting and disrespectful treatment of long serving players and even longer serving (and on the whole first class) backroom/boardroom staff, to the employing and promoting of the odious, back stabbing, lying, tactically vacant K***, not forgetting the endless stream of lies and ridiculous, deeply embarrassing statements (on the rare occurrence one was made) from the V...V...V...VENKYS (sorry, difficult to even write that name). Our club was once one of the most respected and well run in the country, fact. The Jack Walker Trust and Premier League should hang their head in shame at the betrayal of Uncle Jack's legacy. John Williams, no matter how much I want him back, should also take some responsibility. A few simple questions to the Venky's during the takeover surely would have set off enough alarm bells to prevent this tragedy taking place, eg "Rao, can a team be relegated from the premier league?"
I knew we were in SERIOUS trouble within approx. 4 months of Venkys takeover when I heard Her Ladyshi* (you choose final letter) responding to criticism of them in an interview on the radio: "people have been critical saying that I've never been to a live game. While that is true, I am a good listener"!!!! WHAT!!??!!
Andy, I think you're articles have never been overly negative. You seem to be the one voice in the media that's nearly realistic and aware enough of the whole situation. I don't mean that as a slight, I just think we, the fans, need someone in the media to really rip the lid of this festering pot of cockroaches and expose them for the scumbags they are. I think it would make an incredible Panorama episode, but of course the southern based media couldn't actually give 2 hoots and will only generally write to be critical of the people who matter the most, the fans (and I say that as someone who's born and raised in Oxfordshire).
The action group and the media really need to get a proper strategy together to oust Venkys once and for all, not suck up to Shebby because he actually speaks to the fans (90% utter nonsense, but still the only one to apologise for ANYTHING that they've done). He seems to only have the job of Global-Utter-Meaning
less-Title because he's apparently been a fan for a number of years...well so has my uncle Graham, and he would be a million times better at ANY job on the board than Venkys/Singh.
The manager situation for instance, how hard is it to understand...GET A MANAGER WITH PROPER EXPERIENCE, LEARN FROM AT LEAST ONE OF YOUR MISTAKES. But, no, there will be no lessons learnt. We'll **** money up the wall on Scumbag K***, but we won't shell out 2mill for Gus Poyet. We won't approach Alan Curbishley, O'Driscoll, managers who've got experiance and ARE OUT OF WORK! No, we'll go after yet another unproven manager...Literally nothing surprises me at MY/OUR club anymore.
I wish I could see an end to it, but while these "people" "run" our club, I can only see a Portsmouth or even Rangers situation on the horizon...and the worst part is that by that point their behavior and treatment of human beings will have **** off so many people that no one, outside of the fans, will care.
Andy, is there something we can do to get someone to truly look into what's going on behind the scenes? Raise media/public awareness to the fact that this isn't the fans fault, that one of the historically important clubs in England is being decimated, and that no one is doing anything to help us.
Thank you for your articles, don't back away from the good fight, attack!
