Rovers make approach for Blackpool's Appleton
10:25pm Wednesday 9th January 2013 in Sport
By Andy Cryer, Blackburn Rovers reporter
BLACKBURN Rovers have tonight made an official approach for Blackpool manager Michael Appleton.
Despite announcing Gary Bowyer would continue as caretaker boss until the end of the month, Rovers have now confirmed Appleton is their managerial target - despite him only being joining Blackpool from Portsmouth two months ago.
Derek Shaw, Managing Director of Blackburn Rovers said: "I can confirm that we have made an official approach to Blackpool FC about our interest in speaking to Michael Appleton. This is the only candidate we have approached for the manager's job."

Will they ever learn? What on gods earth qualifies Appleton to become the next Rovers manager? WE NEED EXPERIENCE!!!!!
Welcome to Venkys World, a world where if the wrong decision can be made, they'll make it - time and time and time and time and time again.

the only logic i can think of is that tweedle dee & tweedle dum plus charlie careoli sat round a table chucking jelly and trifle at each other and eventually concluded that they (read we) needed a manager who has been at a club where the owners are clueless and the club is in disarray....."who can we get?.....warnock (dirties)? robins (cov)? clark (brum) or appleton (pompey)......let's go for appleton and see what happens?....if he says 'no' we will go for clark"
i feel sorry for the donkey-lashers for putting you through this embarrassing escapade.

Which is a reflection on the owners
No decent manager would work for these muppits
The place is a circus with shebby the ring master
The decent will continue with venkys in charge
More experienced players will leave and their places will be taken by acadamy players and obscure loans and buys from foreign C leagues
You cannot run a football club like this
When will they pack up and go ?

I would like to have the likes of Roberto Di Matteo or Shaun O'Discoll, both managers with a proven records and both inexplicably sackd by their clubs. I think Forest must be regetting appointing McLeish, they have gone to pieces since he arrived. I am not surprised, look what he did at Villa and Brum. Those in charge at Forest must be nearly as daft as those at Ewood!
The club are being their usual inconsistent selves though, every day brings another surprise!

Oh, Steve Keans was 28.38%
GB's is 100%
Seems to me the expected departure of Thomas Ince is the green light for the regime to pounce.....took them awhile to find a manager with a worse win ratio than Kean now they employed one, sacked him
And going to employ another..couldn't
make this up.

Portsmouth P51 W13 D11 L27 = 25% Win Ratio
Blackpool P11 W2 D7 L2 = 18% Win Ratio
Combined Win Ratio = 24% which means from 62 games he took only 63 points = 1 point per game!
How the hell are we supposed to get promoted by averaging 1 point a game! What a bloody joke and just about sums up the lack of ambition (or should that read money) from our illustrious KFC owners!

The only thing you can say about the folk running the club is that they are very entertaining - a laugh a minute. It is very sad though.
Next season I will decide when I see what happens for the rest of the season. At the moment there is no way I will buy a season ticket and no doubt nor will a lot of others. If things don't change Ewood will be nearly empty every week.

Michael Appleton is a perfectly acceptable choice. I'm not ecstatic and it is a bit surprising but there is no need for the level of abuse that he is receiving.
He was assistant to Roy Hodgson and Roberto di Matteo at WBA, and did a good job in very difficult circumstances at Portsmouth (they sold pretty much all of the senior players!), and has started reasonably well at Blackpool, again despite interference from Oyston.
Get behind the team and stop moaning all the time.

Maybe the only message Venky's will understand is not mass protest but an embargo on matches: no fans at games (even if we have pre-paid) might be the only thing that raises their attention?
ive genuinely believed that their strategy this season is to milk the club and sell out. Parachute payment + player sales put them in a strong financial position as investors. We can't afford the wages next season if there isn't promotion and a further drop in divisions provides no TV coverage at all. The combination of costs exceeding revenues and zero PR will see them out but to the detriment of the club which will languish in the lower divisions (if it survives given this Kamikaze financial strategy)

And I don't believe the relationship between Oyston and Appleton is relevant. It's still unprofessional to attempt to poach a manager who's been at a club for 2 months, irrespective of how underwhelming a manager he is or how sorely desperate we've become.

However, I support you 110% if you take charge of my beloved club, all I can ask is that you make us organised and play your own brand of football.

Please accept my sincere appolgies but I need to speak, and as you all do I want the best for my beloved club.
Firstly we now have the top brass that have made a decision and I for one am really happy. If everything is true then welcome Mr Appleton to the club.
Paul, your job is nye on impossible, as the moaning locals will just give negatives without genuine reason.
However, I support you 110% if you take charge of my beloved club, all I can ask is that you make us organised and play your own brand of football.
I will back you all the way, and if true thank you for accepting the job, we are all behind you and certain people from Blackpool are also with you.

Well what contract is Appleton on - must be a couple of years at Blackpool? Why would he leave that for a 4 month deal at BRFC (unless they have changes their mind yet again and are offering a longer deal)???
.
the decision making at Ewood is shambolic.

however, calling out appleton on his record at pompey is more than harsh. lest we not forget he was brought in with plans to build, only with his entire transfer budget taken away and his last remaining pros sold on. many of the games played were with youth team, temp loanees and probably the odd dog & duck sunday leaguer! i think he should be cut some slack for that.
blackpool look less than convincing at the moment, so that would be the first raised eyebrow, but again, he's only just arrived there so early judgments are a bit tough.
just as with any other manager, i would withold opinion until i'd seen them manage the team for a bit, and i would be prepared to do so with appleton.
however, the timing of the move is pretty bonkers, that's for sure. not only has appleton barely set foot on the training ground over there, but why would blackpool sanction any move after such a short time unless they were not happy with appleton's work? if so, why would he do any better at ewood?
and also, if bowyer is at all interested in the job, could we honestly say at this point that appleton would be worth the risk and investment?
i can't help but think that initial fan'power pestering about ensuring we get a 'proven' manager in after berg is contirbuting to us spreading the net far too wide. patience has seen bowyer able to operate pretty well and star tto show that there's more to management than just pure experience. ok, he's not proven anything yet, by any stretch, but he's done well so far.

I know your offer/threat was a joke - a bit like this appointment I think. But maybe he is the man to suit the club as it is now. MA has done a very difficult job quite well previously on the south coast and that speaks volumes for the bloke. I know for fact just to put a side out (any side) was considered an achievement. He had more to work on at Blackpool and will have more again here at Ewood. Got to give the chap a chance if he is our manager - and with the likes of Team GB under him he may have a decent chance of success.

fair enough glen - quite right to go on about the idiocy but you refuse to condemn shebby singh and his part in being complicit in creating this tower of babel.
you talk about kean having resigned and still getting a £1.2m payout. sure he did "resign" but i can only assume that the £1.2m was not handed over willingly and i would have thought there was some sort of ex-gratia payment on the basis of a claim of constructive dismissal. much as i despise kean - you could see how he would have a claim for such. personally i would have fired him for breach of contract with no compo and try to get him to sue rovers.
why do you not condemn singh? - i can only imagine that he is laughing at you and brag as he is holding the tiger by the tail.
once again - what has happened to the 400 page report that was presented to the sports minister and the fa? - which was supposedly going to be explosive about the running of our beloved club.
i am sorry to say that all i perceive brag as now is the attack dog for shebby singh

I think the majority of posters on here do want an experienced manager but don't trust the motives or judgement of the current executives to get that decision right, hence the exasperation each time they say or do anything.
