Rovers make approach for Blackpool's Appleton

First published in Sport Lancashire Telegraph: Photograph of the Author by , Blackburn Rovers reporter

BLACKBURN Rovers have tonight made an official approach for Blackpool manager Michael Appleton.

Despite announcing Gary Bowyer would continue as caretaker boss until the end of the month, Rovers have now confirmed Appleton is their managerial target - despite him only being joining Blackpool from Portsmouth two months ago.

Derek Shaw, Managing Director of Blackburn Rovers said:  "I can confirm that we have made an official approach to Blackpool FC about our interest in speaking to Michael Appleton. This is the only candidate we have approached for the manager's job."

Are these clowns for real? I have never in my life heard so many contradictions. One minute we need a manager ASAP, then there's no rush, then Bowyers in charge, then they go for Appleton who is the exact sort of inexperienced manager we don't need!

Will they ever learn? What on gods earth qualifies Appleton to become the next Rovers manager? WE NEED EXPERIENCE!!!!!

Welcome to Venkys World, a world where if the wrong decision can be made, they'll make it - time and time and time and time and time again.

No comment! Mainly because I know very little about Mr Appleton. He may be OK, he may not - just have to see, I guess.

I would like to have the likes of Roberto Di Matteo or Shaun O'Discoll, both managers with a proven records and both inexplicably sackd by their clubs. I think Forest must be regetting appointing McLeish, they have gone to pieces since he arrived. I am not surprised, look what he did at Villa and Brum. Those in charge at Forest must be nearly as daft as those at Ewood!

The club are being their usual inconsistent selves though, every day brings another surprise!

Unbelievable and not just because he`s not got the experience we so desperately need but also because his managerial record is so poor! Just look at these stat`s:-
Portsmouth P51 W13 D11 L27 = 25% Win Ratio
Blackpool P11 W2 D7 L2 = 18% Win Ratio
Combined Win Ratio = 24% which means from 62 games he took only 63 points = 1 point per game!
How the hell are we supposed to get promoted by averaging 1 point a game! What a bloody joke and just about sums up the lack of ambition (or should that read money) from our illustrious KFC owners!

Maybe this is the time that the "power struggle" is finally ended and Shebby will leave. The club can then carry on under the "power winners" which may or may not prove fruitful, but let's be honest company bickering is not acceptable, as I have experienced. The club can only move forward with all working together.

I agree in principle, but he world is unfortunately unprofessional and unfair. You go for what you think is right and look after yourself. Whether the decision is right or not remains to be seen. The other question to ask is whether Appleton is regretting moving to Blackpool, under the Oysten regime. IF he is appointed, give the guy a chance.

The only thing you can say about the folk running the club is that they are very entertaining - a laugh a minute. It is very sad though.

Next season I will decide when I see what happens for the rest of the season. At the moment there is no way I will buy a season ticket and no doubt nor will a lot of others. If things don't change Ewood will be nearly empty every week.

An utter disgrace. Nothin against MA personally, but like all above have pointed out, where te hell are his credentials to become a rovers manager. Never thought things could get this low. Even if we don't get him, it still shows that things have got worse rather than better behind the shambolic scene. From Allardyce to Appleton in two years . . . .dread to think where we'll be another two years down the line

I'm embarrassed by you lot.

Michael Appleton is a perfectly acceptable choice. I'm not ecstatic and it is a bit surprising but there is no need for the level of abuse that he is receiving.

He was assistant to Roy Hodgson and Roberto di Matteo at WBA, and did a good job in very difficult circumstances at Portsmouth (they sold pretty much all of the senior players!), and has started reasonably well at Blackpool, again despite interference from Oyston.

Get behind the team and stop moaning all the time.

Well, of course, I'm just a doom-monger and nay sayer but if the chap comes we will have managed to have five managers in five months. Is this a record? It does appear that Shabby has been shafted by Venkys and Shaw has won. One more thing. Venkys will be paying out more compen. to Blackpool for Appleton and Shabby when he goes. Seems to be a bottomless pit for compen.. but none to buy players You couldn't make it up..

well, at least we'll be ready for the division below since MA has plenty of experience there! 'forward thinking' that we really don't need!

Maybe the only message Venky's will understand is not mass protest but an embargo on matches: no fans at games (even if we have pre-paid) might be the only thing that raises their attention?

ive genuinely believed that their strategy this season is to milk the club and sell out. Parachute payment + player sales put them in a strong financial position as investors. We can't afford the wages next season if there isn't promotion and a further drop in divisions provides no TV coverage at all. The combination of costs exceeding revenues and zero PR will see them out but to the detriment of the club which will languish in the lower divisions (if it survives given this Kamikaze financial strategy)

Please accept my sincere appolgies but I need to speak, and as you all do I want the best for my beloved club.

Firstly we now have the top brass that have made a decision and I for one am really happy. If everything is true then welcome Mr Appleton to the club.

Paul, your job is nye on impossible, as the moaning locals will just give negatives without genuine reason.

However, I support you 110% if you take charge of my beloved club, all I can ask is that you make us organised and play your own brand of football.

I will back you all the way, and if true thank you for accepting the job, we are all behind you and certain people from Blackpool are also with you.

Negative fans all I can say is fcuk off and back this guy he is class!!

Go have a look at what Pompey fans thought of him and they were desperate. 2 wins out of 12 at Blackpool. I don't know if in time he will be a good manager or not but I feel like we've experimented enough with inexperience and need to go for an actual manager. I also hope this doesn't feel like it's undermining GB when he looks to be doing a half decent job and has got the players showing a bit of effort for the first time in long months.

Shabby, Shaw and Agnew - please leave as soon as possible before you wreck the club anymore. Mr Agnew also claims to be a lifelong Rovers fan so shame on you, shame on you !

We have descended from being a joke to an absolute, abject, inept farce. IF Appleton were the right man for this club ( and he isn't) why was he not approached two months ago when Kean was constructively dismissed? Have his last two months at Blackpool transformed him from a journeyman pub team coach to the next Guardiola? For once, I do not blame Shebby the Snake but suspect he is allowing the idiot Shaw to make this appointment in order to hang himself and pave the way for the Snake to take full and total control. If this appointment happens, the 5,500 gate against Bristol might well be the highest in2013. I will certainly be getting more value from my golf subscription. I hope the former Walker Trust are hanging their heads in shame!

once again, a few jerky knees on this site, but i will agree it's a strange approach.
however, calling out appleton on his record at pompey is more than harsh. lest we not forget he was brought in with plans to build, only with his entire transfer budget taken away and his last remaining pros sold on. many of the games played were with youth team, temp loanees and probably the odd dog & duck sunday leaguer! i think he should be cut some slack for that.

blackpool look less than convincing at the moment, so that would be the first raised eyebrow, but again, he's only just arrived there so early judgments are a bit tough.

just as with any other manager, i would withold opinion until i'd seen them manage the team for a bit, and i would be prepared to do so with appleton.

however, the timing of the move is pretty bonkers, that's for sure. not only has appleton barely set foot on the training ground over there, but why would blackpool sanction any move after such a short time unless they were not happy with appleton's work? if so, why would he do any better at ewood?

and also, if bowyer is at all interested in the job, could we honestly say at this point that appleton would be worth the risk and investment?

i can't help but think that initial fan'power pestering about ensuring we get a 'proven' manager in after berg is contirbuting to us spreading the net far too wide. patience has seen bowyer able to operate pretty well and star tto show that there's more to management than just pure experience. ok, he's not proven anything yet, by any stretch, but he's done well so far.

I know your offer/threat was a joke - a bit like this appointment I think. But maybe he is the man to suit the club as it is now. MA has done a very difficult job quite well previously on the south coast and that speaks volumes for the bloke. I know for fact just to put a side out (any side) was considered an achievement. He had more to work on at Blackpool and will have more again here at Ewood. Got to give the chap a chance if he is our manager - and with the likes of Team GB under him he may have a decent chance of success.

just heard glen mullan on radio lancs talking about the circus at ewood and how barmy this approach for appleton.

fair enough glen - quite right to go on about the idiocy but you refuse to condemn shebby singh and his part in being complicit in creating this tower of babel.

you talk about kean having resigned and still getting a £1.2m payout. sure he did "resign" but i can only assume that the £1.2m was not handed over willingly and i would have thought there was some sort of ex-gratia payment on the basis of a claim of constructive dismissal. much as i despise kean - you could see how he would have a claim for such. personally i would have fired him for breach of contract with no compo and try to get him to sue rovers.

why do you not condemn singh? - i can only imagine that he is laughing at you and brag as he is holding the tiger by the tail.

once again - what has happened to the 400 page report that was presented to the sports minister and the fa? - which was supposedly going to be explosive about the running of our beloved club.

i am sorry to say that all i perceive brag as now is the attack dog for shebby singh

Rather negative that Gazhay,

I think the majority of posters on here got behind Berg even though he wasn't their first choice.

I think the majority of posters on here are behind GB and appreciate his efforts to steady the ship while the backroom chimps continue to throw sh!t at each other.

I think the majority of posters on here do want an experienced manager but don't trust the motives or judgement of the current executives to get that decision right, hence the exasperation each time they say or do anything.

Its a comments page, you have to accept there will be extreme views, but 'you lot' encompasses many intelligent folk who have a long standing passion for our club.

I personally applaud the majority of 'you lot' for caring enough to keep coming back with your opinions and good humour in these dark days.

fans surveys are a waste of time....they are never a true reflection as they are only ever used by those fans with the strongest views (not used by the average fan) and then they are further diluted/distorted by thousands of votes from rival clubs fans (Burnley, Bolton, Preston, Blackpool and further afield...)! And they never influence the clubs mind in who they decide to appoint anyway.

More than open for opinions and I want like everybody else for this to sort itself out. If only we had the right structure we wouldn't be in this mess. However my point was that whomever we get in place a majority will come on here and moan and we need to be realistic and ask who would actually want this job? Answer being nobody with a decent CV so whomever we appoint there will be uproar.

A majority who come on here now don't bother going to watch Blackburn and fully understand why, but this guy is better than some of the other names mentioned and whomever we get people will moan. How about getting behind a new manager and lets have some positives for once!!!![/p]
Rather negative that Gazhay, I think the majority of posters on here got behind Berg even though he wasn't their first choice. I personally applaud the majority of 'you lot' for caring enough to keep coming back with your opinions and good humour in these dark days.[/p]
Green...absolutely.. ....some don't like others having opinions unless it mirrors their own[/p]
GAZHAY

Football is about opinions and decisions but surely there is a time when continued chaos and incompetence prevail for the so called powers in football to act. Surely now they realise Venkeys are not fit and proper to run any football club. Would this or what happened at Pompey be allowed happen at Man U I think not and so it should not be allowed to happen anywhere. This is not about one mistake it has been bad management of the highest order that has given football and football club ownership a terrible image on the same scale as the Glazers but without the publicity and the real possibility of two teams being allowed to dissapear completely. Unfortunately only money matters nowadays and commonsence and genuine fans come last. Please has anyone got an answer because I dont think there is going to be a happy ending whilst the are ALLOWED to carry on destroying everything built up by Jack and his staff. Having said this I keep going because I wont let them stop me but I also understand and respect those who dont. Hoping for the end of this chaos soon please.

I'm just waiting to wake up now. This is a joke total joke. If they made a tv program like the osbornes but in stead of a football club they would make a million out of this lot. Flushing more money down the toilet. how much to buy this man out of a contract in my mind he's not up to the job. Why don't they leave the lads in charge to the end of the season. then sack the 3 muppets On the board and bring in somebody who gives a f??k and get a good manager In.

Sorry that would be common sense

I'm embarrassed by you lot.

Michael Appleton is a perfectly acceptable choice. I'm not ecstatic and it is a bit surprising but there is no need for the level of abuse that he is receiving.

He was assistant to Roy Hodgson and Roberto di Matteo at WBA, and did a good job in very difficult circumstances at Portsmouth (they sold pretty much all of the senior players!), and has started reasonably well at Blackpool, again despite interference from Oyston.

Get behind the team and stop moaning all the time.
IM embarassed by the buffoons at ewood who go with the flow and cannot see what is happening to our club,,how can you be embarrassed by fans pride and joy being ripped away by the whole **** set up down there? its a bloody disgrace nothing against you personally but wake up,,

Shabby says one thing, Shaw says another, and Agnew - well he says....... nothing, and none of them are capable of telling the truth.

If these Three Stooges carry on at OUR club, then I am afraid Blackburn Rovers is finished! They are employed to do the Venky's dirty work.

Does anyone now doubt the asset stripping intentions of the owners?

SHYSTERS GET OUT OF OUR CLUB NOW
