Matthew Halstead
MOORLAND School golfer Matthew Halstead is celebrating again after shooting a hole in one at his local golf club.
Matthew, 14, who only started playing golf four years ago under the watchful eye of Tony Drake at Nelson Golf Club, scored his golfing ace at the 170 yards, par three eleventh hole on the course.
“I couldn’t believe it when I saw the ball go in – I was so pleased I did a back flip on the tee to celebrate,” he said.
Matthew, who plays off a handicap of 11, added: “I won four competitions in 2012 and my game has really improved over the past twelve months. My mum is a scratch golfer and my dad plays off two, so they have really helped me.
“One day I’d like to play professionally but the competition is fierce.”
Having made many friends through golfing, Matthew has received much encouragement from Moorland.
His mum Suzanne said: “The school has really helped and encouraged Matthew.
“He has always had a lot of respect for his fellow golfers and Moorland has helped him develop into a rounded, well mannered person.
“The school has also enabled Matthew to take part in regular competition days, which we really appreciate.”
Moorland Headteacher Jonathan Harrison said: “We are very proud of Matthew’s golfing achievements.”
