Bowyer happy to keep momentum going

First published in Sport Lancashire Telegraph: Photograph of the Author by , Blackburn Rovers reporter

BLACKBURN Rovers caretaker boss Gary Bowyer believes it was important to keep the momentum going after watching his side cruise into the FA Cup fourth round.

Goals from Danny Murphy and Grant Hanley were enough to see off a poor Bristol City side and give Bowyer and Terry McPhillips their third successive win in temporary charge.

"At the start of the game we wanted to get through to the next round and that is what we have done," Bowyer said.

"We had the added bonus of an early goal and that settled us down quickly.

"We needed the second goal, Bristol City kept going, they've got a threat up front so we needed Grant's goal.

"To be fair to Grant at youth level he always contributed with goals and this time last year he scored at Old Trafford so he must like this time of year.

"It was an important result because it just keeps that momentum, we spoke with the players yesterday and we were honest with them and said we didn't want an 'after the Lord Mayor's show' performance, but I felt they were magnificent once more, the energy and the character showed was truly tremendous. It was a great way to finish the week.

"I'm sounding a bit repetitive but I can't praise the players enough, it has been an emotional week, they'll deserve their days off this week and we'll go again against Wolves next Friday."

Who is going to buy us Eckersley? The Jack Walker trust desperately tried to find a buyer for us for three years without success before Venky's turned up so if they leave don't think a knight in shining armour (read Arab Sheikh) is going to come on white horse to buy us.

No offence, but from the games I've been watching something seems to have changed under Gary...

Before anyone starts to tell me that I'm in cloud cookoo land because of the teams being low in the league.. Just remember, this league has already seen bottom 3 beating top 6 a few times.. So a good performance on the day will see any team off in the league, which brings me to my point of 3 convincing wins under Gary being extremely significant... Think what you want though!

Nice to get that winning habit, three wins on the bounce and two consecutive clean sheets. The dingles are trounced by s Barnsley side easily beaten by Rovers and no more Charlie Austin, destined not to play again for that lot and be sold on transfer deadline day so they haven't time to re-invest the money. Go the same way as player sales and cup runs (won't be having one of those this season). Tonight Venkys, Singh, Shaw and Agnew can go and rot because Rovers win and Burnley lose. Just what Saturdays were made for.

There are only 3 successful long term managers in the country, Ferguson, Moyes and Wenger, even Wenger is taking stick at the moment. What makes the knobheads who post on this website think that it so easy to find the right manager?

Venkys knew nothing about English football, they had Anderson running the club and now they have Shebby, enough said, Venkys biggest problem is finding the right advice, There is no doubt that they want success for brfc, if they had the magic wand I am sure they would wave it.

Without Venkys there will be no brfc. Knobheads who post on this site like Dangerous Dave and the Eckersley have no idea and should stop posting, they are probably members of the brag society.

GB is doing an excellent job, hope he can continue to be successful. In the long term, none of the names being mentioned are inspiring, of the ones I've heard I would probably go for Billy Davies. at least you can't fault his enthusiasm.

I personally know many current season ticket holders who after some discussion decided to take exactly the same view as Venkys i.e.

"Don't like what is happening at Ewood Park so we won't be spending any more money down there this month."

These are not kids, they are 2 & 3 generations of lifelong supporters who have already been there for the 'long term' and have no issue raising £15.

Talking to some of them in the pub last night all were happy that they believed a message had been sent to Pune, Venkys should know what to expect when it comes to ST renewal at the end of this season.

What next ? opinion was divided, some want to skip future cup games at Ewood, others want to give their full support to Bowyer and his team.

Whatever happens they are true Rovers fans and will not allow the chaos created by the current owners to have them resort to hurling insults at each other.

One view that I found interesting was the speculation that if Rovers were to get a club with rich owners, like Chelsea or City, down to Ewood the Venkys and all their hangers on would be swarming around the directors box like flies around 5hit looking for a photo opportunity. Probably cost the club another $1m in first class flights and hotels.

Absolutely. I'm a former season-ticket holder, had one from the moment the ground went all-seater. No need for one now as you can turn up for games that are convenient and sit where you want. I've had tickets in every stand this season. Wasn't going to bother yesterday but decided to get out of the house at the prompting of another former season-ticket holder.

Those that didn't go didn't miss much. Can't see many more oppostion teams letting the game be played Danny Murphy walking speed.

The comment was aimed at those who reckon people haven't turned up because they're skint. Go/ don't go, I'm past giving a care, the "club" as qe knew it is dead.

Solbakken was said by many to be a weird choice at the time and time proved right. Don't hold Wolves up as a shining light as they are as badly run as the Rovers. Glad to see the Negative poster is using his accounts again to find the gloom angle, what Rovers won again?? That will never do will it, lets slag of the attendance and blame it on the Venkys
Me and the circa 5000 that bothered to go are the real fans ( apologies to anyone skint or ill that would have gone - times are hard)
The Plasticine troll non fans that post on here have no valid views in my opinion, just hate filled trolling Dingle types
Great interview yesterday by CKR on Rovervision where he praised Gary Bowyer and said the players are all enjoying training and football again as GB lets them express themselves and knows his football (clearly a dig at some at the club past and present) CKR has thrown his shirt to the crowd the last two games and is obviously up for it ( park the cynical comments please)
Team GB (aka Rovers) do look far better and with 3 wins confidence is growing visibly. Diogo Rosado started and looked promising , inch or two away from a debut goal so maybe the Portuguese connection might still pay off
Not all rosy in the garden still a lot to do especially re final ball decisions from some (inc CKR) but we are playing with fresh energy and ideas. Not the greatest game. Second clean sheet though yesterday son we are improving. Grant Hanley had a great game yesterday all round and Bristol never looked like scoring. Yes I know but you can only play the team in front of you and all the Nay say posts said we could not beat a schoolby side under Berg!
Just need the fans back and behind TEAM GB.......

There were only 9000 at Loftus Rd between 2 premier league teams. Most of the grounds yesterday looked poorly attended

Well done Gary Bowyer. Just need to work on that final ball e.g. CKR should have squared for JR tap-in, Hanley should have put the ball through for the an unmarked player in the three against one situation.

Bristol City were dog poo, we should be crushing rubbish like that on our own patch.

Happy New Year to the 10,000 former season ticket holders who are so skint that they can't afford the £10-15 to get onto Ewood yesterday.

So, having a dig at me, for saying people didn't go because they are skint, well i'm I'm skint. Do you have any kids/grandkids?
Well I have three kids and four grandkids whose birthdays are in Jan.
Is it my fault you are seedless like a jaffa and can spend all your money on yourself?
Do you find that statemet offensive, I hope so as do I yours.
I notice you even say you had a season ticket from the 94/95 season, as thats when on wikpedia it says it went all seater.
So you have openly admitted you are a premier league glory hunter and yet you have the front to come on here lecturing all about our finances.
FO short plank head and don't come back

Constructive criticism fellows please.

Always said that their is an hardcore of 6000 down at Ewood who will under any circumstances attend the beloved, and should never be criticized for doing just that.

We have young folk who go on who have nothing to do with the debacle that besieges our club and just wish to witness their club playing and at this time winning.

Good fortune as descended on Rovers at present with the teams we have had the pleasure to play. That said, you have to beat what is in front of you and under the odious one and Berg I can, and will say possibly have not won these games with the goals for and against ? These wins are building confidence to go into the more challenging of games, and under Bowyer and Co I have the confidence that we can compete as we would expect ?

Wolves next week and looking forward to witnessing that. I don't give a good fig that they are in turmoil we can take full advantage of that helping to rebuild the disaster that as befallen our club. Most clubs in the Championship are having a hard time on some level ours must bulldoze through that taking no facking prisoners along the way.

Confidence is everything, ours are regaining that slowly but, surely.

I remember quite vividly the feelings I had when King Kenny went on a win less streak very nearly derailing the plans and dreams of the late J. Walker ! We came through in the end just as I believe we can now.

Constructive criticism ladies and gents please :)

I thought the same.

I think the business world now relises what a couple of incompetent brothers are now the face of BRFC...and the incompetent managers/directors/g

So, I have no faith in any future decision they will make involving BRFC....as luck would have it a couple of football people still worked behind the scenes at Brockhall and for no other reason than the club being badly run they where thrown into the deep end to buy time for the regime.

Can anyone guarantee that the next 'Proper' manager appointed by these clowns will be a success? Nah.....the only glimmer of hope for Rovers fans at the moment is GB &TMc and we should give them all our support and hopefully they have the ability to turn the club around....make no mistake it's nearly job impossible for them because of the interference/presenc

Now then young feller me lad, don't be encouraging a noisy element into our little old folks home.

They won't let you bring bottles of Cider into the Riverside any more, nice flask of Horlicks thats what you need.

And those aren't scratch cards, there's just a lot of flaky skin on the old ST when you get to our age.

Can't smoke in there either, but we do enjoy the odd coughing fit, we can get a right mexican wave going along the front row on a cold, wet night.

Personally can't play bingo any more, doctors orders, bit too racy for my heart, he's told me to stick to watching Danny Murphy and I'll be fine.

The insults have nothing to do with BRFC - fact !

Why don't you all meet up and speak to each other face to face and spew your bile out at each other let us see what the end result will be, eh ?

It's pathetic.

What happened? You were just asking for constructive criticism. I thought you gave a well balanced view and then you post and join with the criticism! The last two years of not only relegated our club and put it in a precarious position, they have deeply divided the fans and I think that's just as big a job to sort out as it is the football side. I used to enjoy the camaraderie at the games, the atmosphere but now, even those sitting near me don't agree. Not just banter either.

I am pointing out that it is pathetic, and if giving a view to prevent it lumps me in with it then so be it.

I agree with you that fan against fan is sad, to say the least !

I am crushingly aware of the deep peril that besets our club having endured, along with yourself, for these past two years, but attacking each other serves no purpose at all. I was merely pointing this out seeing as I've sat with folk as yourselves for nigh on 40 years, and never really experienced this type of vitriolic abuse toward each other.

I've met many a supporter on these pages, who have disagreed, and we all get along fine considerate for each others stance. That is all I'm saying - meet up and be dignified in your argument, and maybe these pages will be easier to view.

Some great comments by Phil Brown on 'Goals on Sunday' earlier. Yes, he was stating the obvious but it's nice to hear someone telling it as it is, even after they've submitted their CV. I doubt he'll get the job, and he already seemed resigned to that, but I'd rather have him than a coach working under Shebby Singh, as seems to be the most popular belief on here. There was also an interesting point made by Ben Shephard with regards to fans and owners concentrating more on the bad times in a manager's career as opposed to the good jobs they've done elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not wearing a rosette emblazoned with 'Brown for Rovers', I just think some managers get more flak than they deserve. There's no guarantee that, should they come back, Hughes or Souness could emulate their previous success at the club. There's also no guarantee that someone like Brown or Coyle would be a failure just because it didn't work out at some of their previous clubs. Both these men got teams promoted from this division so they can't be that bad.

I don't think we should upset the apple cart, where Bowyer is concerned, as he's got the team playing with belief again. However, I am worried that a loss or two will have us questioning where our new manager is when, it would appear, Venky's have stopped looking while they try to resolve the Shaw/Agnew/Singh situation.

Here's hoping that Wolves don't play as well for their caretaker-manager as our boys are doing for theirs!

I have just taken a pay cut to save jobs in the council, I dont drink and I dont smoke, I have a season ticket in the Blackburn end and although I wasnt going to attend the match yesterday I decided to go but bought a ticket for the riverside which was cheaper than getting one for my own seat and yes it was only a fiver difference but after Christmas not everyone has the money that you may have.
I think its a disgrace how you can call the fans when you havent got a clue regarding their financial situations, these are hard times and people have bills and mortgages to pay, maybe these are not a problem for you but I think you should keep your shallow opinions to yourself.

I'll get me violin out. Me I were born in Bull Hill, spent me childhood in Ewood and Mill Hill and have had a silver spoon in me mouth ever since.

I have seen the error of my ways though and now understand that the reason the crowd was half that of our last third round home tie has nowt to do with Venkys but is because unemployment, the ticket price and the cost of Christmas has doubled since last time. I'm lucky though because I can just go out and pick £20 notes of the tree that grows in me back garden.

I haven't directly experienced the level of abuse on this page at the games but certainly unpleasant disagreement and last season around me there were incidents of shoving during a disagreement and once a fight broke out between rovers fans as they were leaving the terrace. Now people aren't even that passionate. Just sit there like they're watching tv. I dont like arguing on here and skim over a lot of it but there are times when some people take the differing opinion to an insulting level such has been done today. Things can only get better as the song goes.

Respect Brother W....it takes time for some folks to learn that we can all agree to disagree without anyone losing face.

Decent draw in the FA Cup - would have preferred a home tie of course - but I recall going to Derby for a 4th Round replay in 91 and Rovers won 5-2! Bent got a couple I think. Also remember being beat 3-1 at the Baseball ground in a 5th Round tie in the seventies. 30,000 on with a cracking Rovers following. It was so packed that when we were leaving the ground some Rovers fans were trapped/squashed against the tea and pie shack which came off its base and started moving along with crowd.....Derby had the likes of Colin Todd and McFarland, Hector and even Charlie George playing for them - so no disgrace to get beat that day.

That's the thing with discretionary spend, you can decide to go to the Rovers whenever you like. Just like I've been doing since the glory days of '75.
That's the most condescending, insulting and snobbish view I'v read on this site ever and that includes the clap trap Burnley fans write. What a biggoted person you are. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I have not joined in with the criticism at all !

Ditto mate.

I just want this nightmare to end, as we all do. Going to press all things considered our team are doing the business out on the pitch with good stewardship under Bowyer and Co, and I just really wish to concentrate on that thus when I read this in fighting I just begin to wonder ?

Thanks for your reply :)

I take offence that you accuse my son of spending his money on smoking, cider, scratch cards and bingo instead of an FA cup ticket when his only crime was to lose his job 2 weeks before Christmas. You should volunteer for a job on the government cabinet. You can sort all the ills of the economy out from your computer keyboard.Hang your head mate.

Yesterday, I went, one son didn't have the cash having lost his job before christmas and the other didn't want to go having got totally sick of Venkys, Singh etc. All of us have season tickets.

What did Phil Brown have to say? I missed it.
He was just saying how Bowyer's not making too many noises with regards to getting the job full time, despite doing brilliantly so far. He also doubts whether Bowyer is a big enough name for Shebby Singh and thinks that Venky's are looking for a coach instead of a manager. He believes that an experienced manager is needed to run the football side of things so they can concentrate on the business side of things. Basically he was saying that it's a fantastic opportunity provided the manager is allowed to manage without interference. Like I said, he was stating the obvious but it was nice to hear it from a non-Rovers fan.

He was just saying how Bowyer's not making too many noises with regards to getting the job full time, despite doing brilliantly so far. He also doubts whether Bowyer is a big enough name for Shebby Singh and thinks that Venky's are looking for a coach instead of a manager. Basically he was saying that it's a fantastic opportunity provided the manager is allowed to manage without interference. Like I said, he was stating the obvious but it was nice to hear it from a non-Rovers fan.
Don't rule Phil Brown out. He is still close to Derek Shaw and was forced out of P N E prematurely when Jennings took over. His friendship with Sam will count against him but he is actually a very competent and engaging person.

I don't know 100% without checking stats, but his record at PNE wasn't great was it ?

I like the fact Bowyer as slipped under the radar without the pressure of the normal channels(if their are any normal at Ewood !)

Only a vastly experienced manager could possibly come in with the remit that will be put on him, and I doubt that is going to happen thus, Bowyer and Co are at this point a blessing in disguise, I would surmise ?

Would I be opposed to Brown as a manager ? No, but his reputation within the game I believe as been tarnished ? We don't need that to happen down at Ewood !

fair points. I am not proposing P.B., just suggesting that he might still be in the frame. Yes, he has been controversial in his approach but he certainly would be nobody`s puppet. In fairness, there will be question marks over any prospective candidate or they would not even be interested.

Wonder if Shebby has been watching - Wolves sack their Manager and within 24 hours have made a formal approach to another club for a replacement - are they rushing things or just better organised than you S?

Also it sounds like Ryan Nelsen is seeking to leave QPR to take up a Managerial appointment - good luck but at least he wont be taking much he leant from his last Rovers Manager other than how not to do it

Good job GB & TMc are producing the goods but let them strengthen the team as they see fit and no as our Global Advisor dreams of doing

Good on GB for the three wins on the trot. Well done mate.

Realistically though the Premiership is more dream than reality now.

Venkys bought the club out of vanity or as a marketing exercise. Its just one of their many businesses and theyll treat it as such, not with the clubs interests at heart as with uncle Jack. They'll just get rid or run it down when it suits them financially and without any conscience whatsoever. They dont care, its just business.

What happens after that is anybodys guess. Whos going to come along and buy us? We were hardly beating buyers off with a stick when we were a well run top ten prem club, had the best chief exec in the country, and there wasn't a recession on.

Not being a doom-monger, just stating some facts, sadly.

Venkys have just got to be the bigest morons in football. Do they really believe that Rovers fans are so increduously thick to believe that yet again more and more promises are being made, statements after statements pour out from Venkys but little or no money or interest.

regardless of the poor ownership, i hope we can kick on from the 3in3 and at least make the play-offs this season
