THE Burnley Schools Sports Partnership’s finals are under way and teams are battling it out to reach Lancashire finals.

Year Five and Six pupils from primary schools across the borough competed in the sports hall athletics for a place in the next year’s county final.

The popular competition enables the traditionally summer sport to be brought indoors for the winter months meaning that budding athletes can compete all year round. It attracted 350 pupils from 30 primary schools Events such as triple jump, long jump and indoor javelin were included in the format as well as a series of track events.

Six schools qualified for the borough final over a series of five heats – giving these schools the opportunity to battle it out for a place in the county final. Organisers said the standard of competition was superb and all the children competed to their full potential. Wellfield Primary School were crowned champions, with St John’ the Baptist RC Primary School from Burnley, taking the silver medal position and St James’ finishing in third.

St Joseph’s Primary school won the small schools competition and having less than 100 pupil’s means that they are also eligible for a place in the county final where they will join Wellfield as Burnley representatives. The county final will take place in February at Stanley Park, Blackpool.

Burnley School Sport Partnership’s Young Sports Ambassadors and leadership students from Sir John Thursby College led the proceedings and were responsible for the officiating of all events as well as presenting the awards at the end of the event.
