Burke impresses at Revolution meet

COLNE cyclist Steven Burke came close to a fine individual win in the Revolution meeting at Manchester Velodrome over the weekend.

The Colne Cyclone has raced sparingly since winning Olympic Gold in London as part of the four-man team pursuit squad, but showed he was coming back into his best form with a superb second place in the flying lap at the meeting on Saturday night.

And he bettered that with victory in the Madison Time Trial with team-mate Tom Murray.

It appeared things would be even better for Burke in the flying lap as he led the way, but his fellow London 2012 gold medallist Ed Clancy stole victory away with a stunning lap of 13.292 seconds eclipsing Burke’s earlier mark of 13.901.

Twenty four year old Burke, who was riding in the colours of his team IG Sigma Sport, competed in five events during round two of the series having also taken part in the opening round last month.

Teaming up with Murray, Burke raced to victory in the Madison – beating Team Sky in the process.

The IG Sigma Sport team’s time of 59.239 seconds was enough to see off WD40 and take the honours.

Burke was 12th in a Scratch Race won by Sky’s Alex Dowsett while he finished 15th in the Elimination Race which was won by another Team Sky rider in Luke Rowe.

And Rowe triumphed again in the Points Race as he saw off Clancy with Burke finishing down in 19th.

That left the Sigma Sport team ninth on the night and eighth overall in the four round series which returns to Manchester in early January before concluding in February at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

Burke sits 14th in the overall individual standings.

The race was Burke’s last of the 2012 calendar.

He is expected to return to the Revolution series for round three in January.

The youngster has enjoyed a stellar year with an Olympic gold medal on the track at London 2012.

He rounded off his weekend by heading to Turf Moor to watch the East Lancs derby.
