ACCRINGTON Stanley boss Leam Richardson says they owe it to themselves to get a result against Oxford United this afternoon.

The teams come together in the FA Cup six weeks after The U’s thumped Stanley 5-0 at the Kassam Stadium, in what proved to be Paul Cook’s penultimate game in charge.

With a place in the third round at stake today, the Reds will be looking to exact revenge “I think we owe ourselves more than owing them one,” said Richardson.

“Regarding the result itself, the performance wasn’t good so we’ll address ourselves first. Whichever team we play against, if we apply ourselves and do our best we should get a positive result.”

Nevertheless, Richardson expects Oxford to arrive at the Crown Ground confident on the strength of that comprehensive win.

“After you’ve beaten somebody so comfortably you’d imagine they’ll come and try to play the same way and do the same effective things,” he said.

“It’s my job and my staff’s job and my players as a group to address if before it happens and tackle them and offer them more problems than what we did down at their place.

“Hopefully it will be a very different game and the scoreline will be very different in our favour.

“We’ll go out there and try to win the game, be very positive and to progress through to the next round could potentially be very big for the club.”

Having Richardson it could be a very lucrative game for the club.

“We’ll tackle it in a different aspect compared to the league.

“It’s a great day. The FA Cup’s a great weekend for everybody. Hopefully we’ll be successful and hopefully we’ll get that lucky draw in the next round.”

And with just one win from their last six league games at the Crown Ground, Richardson hopes the distraction of the cup can help restore home comforts.

“If the supporters can come out and offer their support in numbers and be that extra 12th man to push us over the line it would be great for us because it is so big for the club,” he said.

“While you are in the competition you dare to dream. We’ve got a great tie at home against a very good Oxford team, but if we apply ourselves properly and get a little bit of luck along the way and progress into the next round everybody will be waiting with baited breath to get the handful of balls that everybody wishes for.”
