DESTRUCTIVE former Colne skipper Matt Wilson has quit The Horsfield and signed for Foster’s Lancashire League champions and Worsley Cup holders Lowerhouse – and now he says he can’t wait to get his teeth stuck into his new challenge.

The 32-year-old batsman, regarded as one of the best amateurs in the league, says he was on the verge of swapping his bat for golf clubs after a tough two years on and off the field.

But now Wilson, who led his hometown club to a memorable Worsley Cup win over Ramsbottom in 2010, is relishing the prospect of kick-starting his career at Liverpool Road.

“I was becoming disillusioned with cricket,” said Wilson. “Especially with the last couple of years. I wasn’t scoring runs and have had a few problems with my fingers and at home my daughter had an illness. But thankfully that is all sorted out now.

“I was planning on taking up golf and maybe helping out Earby until I found out that Lowerhouse wanted to talk to me.

“And now I am really looking forward to it. The Lancashire League is a great league to play in and Lowerhouse have an attitude that is on a par with professional clubs and that’s why they’ve won the title for the past two years.

“I really am so excited about the prospect of playing for them - and even though I am 32 I feel I still have the best part of a decade left in me.

“I know all of the Lowerhouse lads really well and they all play with what’s under the badge - and that is the way cricket used to be.”

Wilson has played 241 games for Colne, racking up almost 4,000 Lancashire League runs and says he leaves The Horsfield with many memories.

“The Worsley Cup win was something else,” he smiled. “To lift the trophy as captain for Colne and the chairman Trevor Lonsdale was special and I will never forget that moment.”
