HENNING Berg believes Jordan Rhodes is a “special” goalscoring talent – but admits Rovers’ promotion dreams rest on others sharing the firepower burden.

Rovers’ 22-year-old Scottish international has scored six goals in just 13 appearances since moving to Ewood Park for £8million in August but, ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Peterborough, Berg insists they can’t just rely on him to fire them into the Premier League.

Rhodes scored twice for Scotland in Wednesday night’s friendly win over Luxembourg and, as he continues to play as the lone striker, Berg believes he is still improving.

Berg said: “I am delighted for Jordan. He has worked ever so hard for this club, he had a fantastic season last season and is doing really well.

“It has been difficult times at times for him. There have been a lot of changes in terms of playing style and manager but he is always doing his best, he is making some fantastic runs and when he gets the chance in the box he will score.

“For him to get two goals for Scotland, never mind who you play against, is a great achievement, and I hope he gets even more confidence.

“He is a finisher. Inside the box he is one of the very, very best. To be fair the runs he made outside the box against Birmingham were fantastic but we were just unable to feed himas often as we should have done. He is a good player, a fantastic finisher and a great guy to be working with because he always trys his best. We are delighted he is playing for Blackburn Rovers.

“With the amount of goals he scored in League One means he is special. He is improving as well. “His overall game is getting better, his positional play, his runs, his hold of the ball is improving and it needs to because we don’t have the ball in the box all the time. We would like him to contribute when we don’t have as well.”

Colin Kazim-Richards is expected to return from injury for tomorrow’s trip to London Road and, with Nuno Gomes also available again, Berg is relishing the options available to him.

The Norwegian is still searching for his first win as Rovers boss, after two points from three games, and knows a finishing touch is needed to turn recent improved performances into results.

Berg said: “We have to score more goals from other parts of the team. That goes with all our offensive players but from set plays as well. For us to have realistic chances to be promoted that is something we have to make a good improvement on.”
