OLYMPIC champion Steven Burke has withdrawn from this weekend’s Track Cycling World Cup meeting in Glasgow.

Burke was the only member of this year’s gold medal winning team pursuit squad due to ride at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, but British Cycling confirmed he has pulled out.

No official reason has been given by British Cycling for the ‘Colne Cyclone’s’ absence with his place in the endurance squad going to junior prospect Joe Kelly.

Burke’s fellow Olympic champion Joanna Rowsell has also pulled out, her place going to junior time trial world champion Elinor Barker.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for these two youngsters to step in and experience the GB competition environment at an elite level,” said GB performance director David Brailsford.

After the Glasgow event there is just one round of the Track World Cup remaining, which takes place in Aguascalientes, Mexico, from January 17-19 next year.

Burke is now expected to ride in the Revolution series round two meeting in Manchester Velodrome on December 1 under his team banner of IG-Sigma Sport.

He took part in the opening event of the series last month, also held in Manchester, where he was third in the flying lap, as his team finished the meeting in eighth place overall.
