IN muddy, wet and windy conditions primary schools from across Hyndburn and Ribble Valley took part in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Schools Sports Partnership cross country event at Wilsons playing fields.

And it was a day for the all Saints. For while it was St Leonards who took the team honours in both the girls and boys races, it was All Saints pupils who shone through in the individual events.

Jane Sheridan, School Games Organiser, was delighted with the way the annual race went despite the tricky conditions.

She said: “It was a fantastic event enjoyed by all and was made possible thanks to the newly established leadership academy from Norden High School and Sports College. “The academy provides volunteer opportunities to pupils in a variety of roles including team manager, official, reporter and photographer. “Special thanks must go to Hyndburn Athletics Clubs and Norman Mitchell in particular for all the time that they dedicated to organising this event.”

George Owen of All Saints was first boy home ahead of st Leonards’s pair Oliver Chambers and William Young whose performances were good enough for their school to take the team prize.

All Saints were second team with St Joseph’s third.

In the girls race, Nicola Moynihan was first with Amelia Bolton of St Leonard’s second.

Katie Griffin of Our Lady St Huberts in third place.

Amelia’s second place finish helped St Leonards to the team prize with All Saints second and St Peter and St Pauls third.

Today is the turn of Hyndburn and Ribble Valley’s 10 secondary school to battle it out for cross country honours with the top boys and girls going on to represent the boroughs in the forthcoming English Schools Cross Country Championships.
