Blackburn Rovers striker Rhodes confident of bright future

JORDAN Rhodes believes Blackburn Rovers are heading in the right direction under new boss Henning Berg – and is hoping to make his first home game in charge a match to remember.

Berg will be in the Rovers dug out as boss for the first time for Birmingham City’s Championship visit on Saturday and Rhodes hopes the expected party atmosphere can end with a first win for the Norwegian.

After a miserable first game at the helm at Selhurst Park on Saturday, Berg oversaw a much improved performance as only an injury time equaliser denied Rovers three points and gave Huddersfield an undeserved 2-2 draw on Tuesday night.

And, ahead of Saturday’s visit of Birmingham, Rhodes is looking for more of their midweek form – but this time with maximum points.

The striker said: “It will be a good occasion on Saturday. It’s the manager’s first home game and it is just a shame we have not got the first win for the manager.

“What better setting than the first home game though – against one of my old managers (Lee Clark) so that will be a funny occasion as well.”

And Rhodes admitted that he was pleased with the way Rovers responded to the weekend defeat at Palace with the performance at Huddersfield.

“That was a Blackburn performance on Tuesday,” he added.

“We managed to pass it about, the quality was good and hopefully we have given the fans something to cheer about.

“They will be very disappointed we didn’t get three points.

“That was the way the manager wants to play and everyone associated with Blackburn wants to play. It is just frustrating we did not win.”

Rhodes bagged his sixth goal for Blackburn in Tuesday’s draw with his former employers as he continues to show his clinical finishing, despite spending much of the campaign isolated as a lone striker.

He insists he does not think too much about his own individual fortunes though, as he prefers to focus on the collective.

“It was not the best of first touches but maybe that was a blessing in disguise,” he said of his latest Rovers goal. “I just kept my head down, kept my eye on the ball and made good contact with it.

“It is just disappointing it isn’t in a win.

“Whenever I get the chance I give it my best, and when chances do come I will try my best to hit the target and make the keeper work. Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t – that is football.

“Everything seemed to be going our way. We played really well, had the majority of the play but unfortunately the last 10 seconds we feel a little hard done by and came away with the 2-2 draw.

“On reflection we might not have deserved it but that is football.

“Even though we went a goal down, I thought we were very much in it.

“We had good play, created chances. It was just unfortunate we came off without the three points.

“Maybe if you had talked about the draw before the game it would have been a good point but we are disappointed and that is a good sign.

“It shows what direction we are going in.”

It is suprising that despite Rovers having 5 wins out of 7 at home they have only scored 8 goals, if we can come up with players providing more assists we can certain double the number of goals scored, there is not one particular player who has taken charge in taking top spot in that department.

Rhodes seems to have a really grounded and sensible attitude to the game. Their is much to like about this young talented man. I liked how he mentioned before the hudds game about not over-doing the celebrations if he scored and also what he said about being moved by the hudds fans support - even though a small number of them boo-ed him after the game,

Along with Rochina, he is definitely one of the brighter signings under Venkys - and dare I say Kean's -tenure. I would like now Bruno and some of the other signings to show what they can deliver. But Jordan Rhodes is definitely showing he's not only a force to be reckoned with, but he's a team player and can handle the pressure that's being placed on him. A bit more service and assists as mentioned and sky's the limit with this lad.

Three R's for me on Saturday - Rhodes, Rochina and either Richards Or Rosado who I thought looked very good on Tuesday aside of giving the ball away for their goal and falling over when through down the wing! (maybe Richards then!) hahaha!!!

Agreed. Rosado could be a very good player. Apparently some top clubs were looking at him.

Perhaps he might start pushing for a start in central midfield alongside either Lowe or Murphy.

Just refreshing to see Berg willing to give these young, exciting lads a chance! I think if Rochina plays in week in week out we will benefit no end.

Rhodes looks and sounds a model professional so we should build our side to suit him!

Make Rhodes the Captain.

His work rate along with his never say die attitude would serve well to the rest of the team, IMO ?

My only real grievance from Tues was the inability in keeping the ball away from the onion bag in those last dying seconds which culminated in the goal thus breaking our B&W hearts, but I saw enough of green shoots under Berg.

Just not having to watch the Odious One on the touchline is heaven !

Henning Bergs B&W army as a great ring to it :)

Good luck Henning in turning around the fortunes of our grand old club - BRFC.

Giving the young players a chance can't do any harm. We can't play any worse than we have been doing this last two years.
Hopefully this will also give the so called experienced pros a kick up the backside.
It may take a while but I think Berg will get it right. There are signs of improvement already.

Rhodes is right to feel optimistic especially with Lowe, Givet, Nunes and Best to come back into the side then it gives us more good options and the squad (now that it is being properly managed) is starting to look quite strong.

Maybe a Center Half and another striker in place of KR is all we will need in the Jan window?

Just remember this Rovers could come and take Austin off the dingles anytime they want, despite Venkys we are still a far superier club with more pride and honours than burnley could ever dream of. That is why we get so many dingles on here, its their little way of feeling like a Rovers fan, their tongues hangout at the name of Blackburn Rovers, they shoot their lo*d every time we score..Sorry lads you will never be one of us....you just aint good enough....dont brag about Austin to much....otherwise we may take him off you.

I'm looking forward to what type of team Berg eventually puts together ?

Their are many, IMO, that will be retained, but some must be shown the door asap ?

You mention a center half in Jan ? - well for me, Grant Hanley should be shown the door ! He his another Martin Taylor in the making ! In my humble estimation GH, Tuesday was shockingly bad.

I would suggest Berg will want a class CD come Jan. A leader of men would be excellent :)

We all ned to give Berg a chance to change things, but I thought we were very poor again against Huddersfield.

The so called "quality" passing was all backwards and sidewards, and on the balance of play a draw was a fair result at best.

Maybe a Center Half and another striker in place of KR is all we will need in the Jan window?
But Berg likes to play 442 and we don't posses a right winger. Well apart from CKR but he ain't gonna cover his full back. Also crying out for a midfield general that will allow the talented lads to play around him. Not sure where to start at the back, just pray givet can play every minute til end of season!

Which is why he won't be at that cesspit for long.
Charlie Austin will leave Burnley for a bigger club in January just like Eddie Howe did.
Do you mean Just like "THE YAK" did when he jumped off the rat infested sinking Rovers ship and signed for that force in world football....GUANGHZO

U R&F FC ???
ha ha ha, the worst possible comparison. What a fool.
I don't think so me old soup stained mucker, he saw which way you were going and had the good sense to jump off, he clearly chose a much bigger club and couldn't wait to hot foot it to the other side of the world to get away from Trampwood.

Selling N'Dozi for 3m was actaully good business. No forward gear and he's slowed down Stoke already. By the end of the season he'll not be a regular for Stoke.
Can't make out the Rhodes transfer, he's certainly very promising but stumping up 8m was against the grain of the usual purchase policy of Venkys. Mad reckless gamble to try to show willing ? Anyone got any inside story on this ?

If you cant see the link.. its from the Daily Fail:

"Rovers row: Blackburn fan keeps revealing Berg's team... The new boss is NOT amused

Blackburn boss Henning Berg has been left fuming – by a fan that keeps revealing his team selections.

The new Rovers manager is keen to keep his line-ups under wraps to try and catch opponents by surprise. But a supporter who lives near their training ground in Brockhall has been revealing the starting 11 the day before matches.

Now Berg wants the fan, who goes under the name ‘Rovers4Good’ on the BRFCS website, to stop.

He said: 'Wait until an hour before kick-off, or even an hour and 10 minutes so they have it 10 minutes early.
'It could be that extra one per cent and we need to get people to understand that. 'The more we can keep back from our opponents will be a good thing and we’re aware of things coming out from the outside.

Ahead of the game: Grant Hanley (left) celebrates his goal against Sheffield Wednesday this season

'We’ll have to look into it and see what we can do to make sure what we do on the training pitch is not put on the Internet. 'If I wanted to make big changes for a game, it could have an effect.

'It’s good that they’re interested in the team – but they don’t have to put it out!'

What an azzwipe this Rovers4Good is.. he might as well be a dingle!

I know what you mean about the defense - but even though it is most fans perception that we are shipping loads of goals every game, actually there are only two teams in this league that have conceded LESS goals than the Rovers. (We conceded 18). Think what we can achieve if Berg manages to tighten the back four up....

Are you happy with central midfield, Mr French ? I think we need to solve that problem more urgently than we need another Striker if Best is going to be available.

Lowe looks good next to Etuhu or Murphy, but then so would I. Maybe Vucevic can settle in there, I think its more natural for him than on the wing, but the buffoon didn't use him enough for anyone to really know !

My thoughts now turn to Saturday and I'm thinking Etuhu rather than Murphy, for a bit more physical presence. From memory, Birmingham are a big side, using and giving away a lot of set plays, so maybe MGP too.

Well its great to see our fans realising Henning Berg is a decent manager with no BS being spoted he tells it as it is. The team are looking better just require that massive ingredient called confidence which comes from winning and knowing they played well to win,

With a fit Dunn and Lowe and with Etuhu, Pederson, Markus Olsson, Rosado and yes even Mr. Murphy (but only if he starts to shape up) plus Simon, Nunes and Formica then actually midfield is not too bad.

I almost forgot but we also have Raheen Hanley, Jorge, Cotton, Morris and Linganzi as midfield back-up...so maybe we could unload a couple of these and look to bring in a Robbie Savage type of player...?

Sadly not one of them seems to fit the mould of a strong central midfield presence, in the mould of Batty, Flitcroft, Carsley, Savage...

Now then, Linganzi, the name sounds familiar, does he really exist ?

Was he one of Sams signings.....? One of the several he made that were all going to become the 'next Viera'..?

He went on loan to Preston at one stage but he is still on the periphery of our present squad. Maybe Appleton will sign him for Blackpool as he looked at him closley when he was at Pompey?
