Berg won't be rushed into loan market

First published in Sport Lancashire Telegraph: Photograph of the Author by , Blackburn Rovers reporter

HENNING Berg insists he won’t be making any panic moves into the loan market just yet as he uses a busy next week to fully assess his squad.

Ahead of this evening’s Championship trip to Huddersfield Town, Rovers’ new boss concedes the club are a ‘little short’ on strikers at the moment but is adamant it would be unfair on everyone to make instant changes.

With Nuno Gomes struggling to be fit for the trip, Jordan Rhodes remains the only out and out striker available for the clash against the Terriers – but Berg wants to see what his current players are capable of.

Caretaker boss, and now Berg’s assistant, Eric Black had attempted to bring in Stoke striker Cameron Jerome on loan during his month at the helm, but Berg won’t be thinking about reinforcements until he knows what he has at his disposal.

Berg said: “We would like to score goals. We want to do well and win many, many games and the more goals we score the better. At the same time, we are short in terms of numbers of strikers.

“We will see how it develops. My main focus this week has been the players who are fit and the players who are here now. I need to get to know them 100 per cent, see them in games, making sure we do everything we can to win.

“You would like to introduce a few ideas of how we want to do things. For me, it is more like the short term at the moment and then next week it is easier to think about a little about the full squad. because I have seen players, seen them in training. So those who haven’t had the chance to play in the team, get their chance.

Players like Simon Vukcevic.?

“I don’t know what he will do, but I know his history,” added Berg.

“He is a regular for the Montenegro first team so he is a good player and he showed that when he came on as well. I thought the lads who came on did well.

“It would not be fair on anyone if I didn’t assess what we had here first before we start thinking about loan players. It wouldn’t be fair on the club because the last thing you want to do is get someone in and not play them.”

Rovers backroom staff is also unchanged since the previous regime, with Berg taking a similar view about them.

“I will use this period to assess everyone and work with everyone.” he said. “I am working with everyone who is here and then we will take it from there.”

Berg is the first to admit Rovers have to improve after a miserable2-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on Saturday, both offensively and defensively.

He believes Huddersfield will be another tough test and is relishing coming up against his former Rovers team mate Simon Grayson, who is now in charge of the Terriers.

He said: “We were here at the same time and I think the way his teams play shows a lot about him as a person. He was always hard working, always honest. He was not always happy not playing but he always did his best.

“He is a good lad and I have spoken to him over the years. He came to Norway when he was doing his coaching badges, when I had my team there. “It is good to see him as a manager and getting up last season, scoring a lot of goals and playing very direct football. They still are quite direct although this season they have changed a bit.

“You need hard work in every league. You go to the best teams in the world and they still work hard. You need quality as well. It is not one or the other.”

He talks a lot of sense, no good taking players for the sake of it until he can assess what he has already. Lets face we dont even know what we really have, kean/singh brought in players and never gave them a real chance.

Theres been no logic or process to bringing in new players over the last two years. Players brought in and then not used or used and shelved for no obvious reason. HB is doing right in looking at every player on the books and identifying the useful ones. Im sure a trick is being missed with some who have been left out. Keans selection was based on who were his friends and who was in the dunces hat.

Nice to see how thorough he is being, this first week has been a good step forward in my opinion, considering we now have a manager who is doing his job by assessing teams! Won't forget Black's comment about not even knowing Simon's natural position! I'm happy to give him a few months to sort the cr@p right through from the team to the backroom staff before he can start getting the performances and results we need because by god he'll need that long! Obviously I am praying we can start getting performances and results from tonight. Good luck boys!! HENNING BERG'S BLUE & WHITE ARMY!

Having thought about that, it's quite a realistic offer. Maybe they'd accept £150,00 for Austin and we could just loan them Goodwillie and Murphy whilst they pay their wages.

A mid table finish with returning fans should be a major achievement. The current fans expecting promotion are like the farmers simply deluded. Yes DELUDED!

In fact...since Venky's took over, how many loan players have Rovers' borrowed from other clubs? RSC for one...cannot think of many more..Yet Rovers' are happy to loan players out!! (well, that's if anybody wanted second rate players).
.
Goodwillie for instance, why did his loan period end so suspiciously early?? Did Palace get sick of lining a certain agent's pockets??
.
Then there was Spursgate...where there was not one single shot on target (first time in over 10 years). We had players coming off and winking at the bench. Have there been illegal betting patterns in the far east??

If there are players that are aware of untoward - and possibly illegal activity - then it would be better for them to come forward NOW before ending up in a prison cell....

Jack Walker spent loads of money to get Rovers back in Premiership league in 1992 and 2001.Venky needs to splash more cash on players now if they are serious of Rovers back in the Premiership league.

Yeah sure Mikey!! How is your alter ego Wild Rover doing? Loan signing clearly won't be the order of the day. They will possibly have different agents and cannot be controlled as much as permanent (free transfer) signings. Put simply...no money can be made from loan players. . "Refreshing change to have an honourable bloke in charge"? These people wouldn't know honour if they looked it up in the dictionary. Shame on you Henning for getting involved in this!!
Have there been illegal betting patterns in the far east?? . If there are players that are aware of untoward - and possibly illegal activity - then it would be better for them to come forward NOW before ending up in a prison cell....
answering your own posts again smelly what a first rate pr*** you are
Your scheme is falling apart...admit it. Hand yourselves in and you might just mitigate any sentences that come your way.

We have 39 players in 1st team squad, on top of last nights squad (Yes I know some are injured), but attacking options we have; Gomes, Goodwillie, Slew, Junior Richards & Best! Did we sell Blackman, he was never given a proper run! So many have come & gone in last 2 years!!!

Thanks to Berg, who show some guts to make the players play.

We still did not see Paulo Jorge and Nuno Henrique
