Full time: Bristol City 3 Burnley 4

Chris McCann grabbed a winner deep into stoppage time as Burnley edged a seven-goal thriller in the Championship at Ashton Gate.

Substitute Paul Anderson looked to have secured a 90th-minute point for Bristol City when Albert Adomah's free-kick cannoned back off the bar, but midfielder McCann headed home Kieran Trippier's raking set-piece in the sixth minute of time added on.

Charlie Austin escaped the attentions of the City defence to give Burnley a ninth-minute lead, scoring for the eighth consecutive match to equal a club record set by Ray Pointer in the 1958/59 season.

The 23-year-old's 13 goals in this period compared to Pointer's 12 put him one ahead in the record books - a position Burnley were not in for very long on the pitch thanks to Steven Davies' free-kick.

City were on top for the rest of the opening period but were left to rue their failure to make the pressure count as Burnley raced clear with a quickfire double.

Handball in the area by Mark Wilson allowed Austin to make it 14 in eight and Martin Paterson's deflected strike found the net moments later.

Sam Baldock's penalty set up a grandstand finish and both sides obliged, leaving Burnley caretaker manager Terry Pashley with two wins from as many games in charge.

McCann's lofted pass from deep caught out the Robins backline and Austin stole in to round goalkeeper Tom Heaton and seemingly inevitably open the scoring.

Burnley's enterprising start was emphatically checked in the 17th minute when Michael Duff fouled Davies just outside the D.

Complaints from the visitors that Davies had gone to ground a little easily were compounded when the same player picked himself up and arched the free-kick over the defensive wall and in Davies tried to repeat the trick six minutes later but fired over and at the other end Paterson - into the starting line-up because Ross Wallace suffered an injury in the warm-up - might have extend Heaton further from Austin's deep cross after the half-hour.

It was a brief moment of respite for Burnley, who found themselves largely on the back foot after City's equaliser, but it remained all square at half-time after Liam Fontaine fizzed a volley over from Stephen McManus' header.

A quiet start to the second half exploded around the hour as Pashley's men took first control of the contest.

Paterson's header from Junior Stanislas' cross struck Wilson on the hand, referee Lee Collins pointed to the spot and Austin duly obliged to register his 18th goal of the season after 59 minutes.

It was three a minute later when Paterson's back-post effort from McCann's cross took a wicked deflection off Richard Foster to leave Heaton with no chance.

City were handed a lifeline in the 75th minute when Burnley centre-back Michael Duff was adjudged to have fouled McManus from Wilson's corner and Baldock slammed the penalty into the centre of the goal.

Adomah fired against the underside of the bar after being fouled by Brian Stock to leave Anderson with a simple finish - a luxury McCann was not afforded when he angled home at the death to condemn City to a third straight loss.

Great result and a battling performance.

Congratulations to Charlie Austin on equalling the club record for goals in consecutive games.

Well done to Terry Pashley for helping the team to re-find that fighting spirit.

Defence, keep your heads up. - A pen and two free-kicks, which might have gone over on another day.

Now to Wales !!

Chris McCann's late goal made it two wins out of two for Burnley caretaker-manager Terry Pashley.

McCann headed home in the sixth minute of stoppage time after Paul Anderson looked to have saved a point for City.

Charlie Austin scored Burnley's first two goals, the second a penalty, to take his season's tally to 18.

Steven Davies equalised the first, but Austin and Martin Paterson made it 3-1 before Sam Baldock netted a penalty to begin the home side's comeback.

Austin's double saw him equal a club record, as he became the first player to score in eight successive Burnley appearances since Ray Pointer in 1958/59.

The striker opened the scoring at Ashton Gate in the ninth minute, latching on to McCann's lofted pass and going round keeper Tom Heaton to score.

But the lead did not last long, as Davies arched a free-kick over the wall and in after he had been fouled by Michael Duff just outside the penalty area.

Davies then fired another free-kick over before Paterson, promoted from the bench when Ross Wallace suffered an injury in the warm-up, turned Austin's deep cross too close to Heaton.

Paterson was a central figure, however, as Burnley struck twice in two minutes around the hour mark to take a 3-1 lead.

First he earned a penalty when his header from a Junior Stanislas cross struck Mark Wilson on the hand, and Austin converted it for his 14th goal in eight matches.

Then Paterson's back-post effort from McCann's cross took a deflection off Richard Foster to leave Heaton helpless.

City were handed a lifeline inside the final quarter of an hour when Duff fouled Stephen McManus from Wilson's corner and Baldock slammed the penalty into the centre of the goal.

Then Albert Adomah fired a free-kick against the underside of the bar to leave Anderson with a simple finish.

But there was still time for McCann to condemn Bristol City to a third straight defeat when he headed home Kieran Trippier's set-piece.

Bristol City manager Derek McInnes:

"We can't defend like that and hope to achieve anything. We couldn't defend a cross into our box at the death which was very disappointing. A number of injuries have left us without much height to defend set-pieces, but we have to do better.

"I should be talking about a storming comeback and giving the lads credit for showing great spirit, but it's hard to do that when you have lost the game.

"We have been put through the mincer tonight and so have our fans. But there is another home game against Hull on Saturday and we have to respond."

Burnley caretaker-manager Terry Pashley on Charlie Austin:

"I've only worked with the lad for a week, but he is a breath of fresh air. Apart from his goals, Charlie is a total team player.

On his own future:

"I don't expect anything except to carry on doing the job the board have asked me to do for as long as they want.

"I am enjoying working with the first team and it's great to be involved in the atmosphere of Championship games. But the board will make the best decision for Burnley."

Telegraph's so called sports reporter who never goes to a game simply copies and pastes the same article as their own at 22:41

The reporting by this paper on our local clubs is non-existent. Flanagan, cryer, etc. not a journalist among 'em. All they do is troll the various websites for stories they can simply copy and paste. Hardly journalism is it, siting in front of a computer all day cutting and pasting stories?
