Rugby: Blackburn let leaders off the hook
5:59pm Tuesday 23rd October 2012 in Sport
IT WAS a case of what could have been for Blackburn who let unbeaten North Lancs/Cumbria Division One leaders Wigton off the hook.
Had the Ramsgreave Drive made the most of their first half territorial advantage then a prize scalp could have been there for the taken.
At the end of the first half the home side were very much in the game, trailing 7-3, and had Wigton slightly worried.
However the Cumbria side showed just why they are top of the table as they took control of the game in the second half and pulled away from Blackburn with two unanswered tries..
Wigton made a bright start an early try and conversion put them 7-0 up before Blackburn replied with a penalty from Leon Fifield.
Both teams missed penalty kicks at goal and while Blackburn enjoyed good territory, crucially they lost line outs and scrums high up the field.
Wigton didn’t need to wait long to add to their total, a penalty kick extending their lead then scored their second try of the game when the visiting scrum half stretched to score under the posts.
And after more constant pressure on the Blackburn line, Wigton scored a third try, picking up from the base of a turning scrum.
