Death junction revamp set for go-ahead

PLANS for a new £650,000 safety scheme at a notorious road junction were expected to move another step closer today.

Lancashire County Council was due to formally approve £50,000 to buy three areas of land at the Britannia Crossroads in Oswaldtwistle to build a "life-saving" roundabout.

The council has been under pressure to improve safety at the junction following the death of 20-year-old Robert Jamieson, from Kingsmead, Knuzden, in February last year.

The crossroads is at the junction of Lottice Lane and Haslingden Road.

Robert, a second year architecture student at Salford University, died after a collision involving his Peugeot 106 and a bus carrying pupils from Rhyddings High School, Oswaldtwistle.

A county council spokesman said that preliminary design work on the roundabout scheme has been completed and it was now necessary to purchase land around the site needed for the project.

It is thought that construction could begin in February next year, two years after Robert's death.

Funding for the project has been earmarked in the county council's 2006/2007 budget.

The council said that a local consultation with local residents will be completed before any detailed design plans are finalised for the roundabout.

Robert's parents, Bob and Susan Jamieson, have long campaigned for safety changes to be made at the junction.

Speaking about the campaign to build a roundabout at the site Bob commented: "We know that it's not going to happen overnight, but we have overcome the first hurdle to get this far.

"As long as we know something is being done about the problem then that helps us, and will hopefully prevent anyone else from losing their life at this terrible junction."
