THE ancient art of scything was on show at the North West's first festival dedicated to the skill.

The event - held at the RE-TURN Community Environmental Reserve, Turn Village, near Edenfield on Saturday and Sunday - also boasted the first Lancashire and North West scything competition.

There was also public displays of different scythe types and scything techniques and demonstrations of rural field craft traditions such as hay rope making, rake making and hayrick building.

There were also workshops for beginners and skilled people, an introduction to the use and care of a scythe and the restoration of upland meadows.

They were led by Simon Fairlie, Walter Lloyd and other rural experts.

Children's events, refreshments, country crafts and food stalls were also available.

Ian Hunter, from organisers the Littoral Trust, said: "As a region steeped in tradition with a wonderful farming community, Rossendale was the ideal place for the North West's first scythe festival and I am sure the event will develop into a summer highlight for many years to come."
