Why didn't companies offer a better deal in the first place?

Uncharacteristically, despite being born a Yorkshire man with three Scottish grandparents, it’s not that we don’t like spending money – we hate wasting it!

So having a spare few minutes the other day I wandered around the 'comparison' web sites. (Wonders as an aside, is there a 'comparison' site comparing 'comparison' sites?) I wondered about our gas/electric costs and went into the more specialist (?) 'switch' sites.

One claimed they could save me 20 per cent. Not to be sneezed at!

I continued and quickly found myself signing up.

Hadn’t done it for quite a few years, when I signed over to one of our big supermarkets selling fuel.

It always makes me smile: “I’m just popping to Asdcoburys to get some gas”!

Still no idea if I saved anything but I resolutely decided it was time for a change.

I know they say you’re more likely to change your spouse than change your bank (in my case, 34 and 43 years respectively!) but I was UP for it!

The deed took no time whatsoever and somehow or other the new gas and electric would come down the pipes and wires in four or five weeks.

Firm A then rang, and again, and again.

"Sir, why are you swapping from us?" Price.

"But we would have liked the first opportunity to offer you a price cut, we have a range of cheaper tariffs we can offer you" But why haven’t you done it already?

"We value our loyal customers . . ." You can imagine the way this went.

'Sorry to hear you’re leaving us' letters followed.

Then my car insurance renewal notice came through, and now conversant with the process I gave it a whirl. Saved £100+ on my new firm.

Here comes the anticipated déjà vu folks!

Phone calls first, Then letters. "We would have matched/bettered any deal"!

But why didn’t they damn well do it on a regular basis?

I could go on but it would inevitably lead to the use of profanities!

They can all go . . .

Had any of the same? What did you do?

Right, why don't we all across East Lancashire go for swapping some of these to rattle those taking us for granted. Nice One, Sir Bill.

For every one person who changes because of price, there are probably ten that don't, and its those ten that they make the profit on!
