Letter: Common sense is best policy

I've witnessed many cyclists doing crazy things on the road, but most are sensible.

On the other hand, some but not all motorists could be a bit more cautious when driving past cyclists.

Maybe providing a form of training for cyclists would improve standards of cycling and therefore allow cyclists to gain more respect from motorists which, in turn, might make cycling safer.

I don’t know if it is worth all the effort, though – maybe people should just use common sense.

One of the great things about cycling is that it is so accessible, so would you want to jeopardise this by bringing in some kind of formal training? It's an interesting idea, though.

i agree , some ccylist do need to show more care. maybe the same could be said about motorists?
maybe having riding a bike around a busy town centre, along a dual carriageway and around a busy roundabout could be made part of the driving test then motorists would understand just how vulnerable cyclists are.and maybe , just maybe treat them as a life form?

What annoys me about some cyclists is that they want it all their own way. In order to avoid road works, one guy I know road down the pavement nearly knocking down an elderly lady. When she shouted at him he raised two fingers accompanied by the F word.
Later he complained bitterly when he was nearly pushed into a ditch by a passing bus.

Cyclists should have to pass a driving test, most of all they should have insurance.
