Letter: Halal methods out of date

Primitive, out-of-date religious beliefs that cause undue suffering to other forms of life should not be tolerated in this country (‘Halal meat giant saved from chop’, LT, August 15).

Are slaughter houses not enough without this cruel, belief being allowed to take place?

Those who eat halal meat should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. If there really is an afterlife on this earth, I hope they come back to experience the same.

Years ago halal would not have been allowed and the RSPCA would have been onto them . Nowadays because it is a mainly muslim practice it is allowed regardless . This is because this country has adopted a " you cannot offend / upset the muslims " attitude . Whatever it is about .

I think we probably allowed jewish (kosher) slaughter of animals before halal as there have been Judaism and jews in the UK from long before Islam was invented.

Both forms of slaughter are totally unnecessary these days as the original purpose that the animal couldnt be stunned when slaughtered was to be able to tell if it was ill or not. If it couldnt react to its throat being cut it could be because it had some disease that made it unfit to eat.
Now that we have animal inspectors and veterinary care only animals fit for human consumption are sent to the slaughterhouses.

Some jews and muslims say that the bllod isnt fully pumped out of the animnal if its stunned before slaughter whereas studies have shown that even if an animal had died from a heart attack and had its thoat cut there was the same amount of blood loss as one that was still alive when their throats were cut.

Obviously whether the animal was stunned or not, its heart would continue to pump blood until it stopped beating or had emptied the body of blood.

So neither argument is valid or justifiable now.

This cruel and stone age practice is carried out by people who point at the sky and grunt when an aircraft goes over.

Whilst I do not personally agree with Halal slaughter (or Kosher for that matter), I think we all have a right to know which slaughtering methods were used in the preparation of meat that is used in food dishes offered at any restaurant/cafe, on sale at any butchers, or used in proucts sold packaged or otherwise from stores and shops. There would be a huge outcry, and rightly so, if Muslims discovered that the food that they had consumed contained meat that wasn't slaughtered using halal methods. Therefore I want the right to know if any meat product that I consume has been slaughtered in accordance with MY beliefs (ie not Halal or Kosher).
Pardon the expression, but, whats good for the goose, is good for the gander!

Hi Darwen Malc.

To find out if your supermarket sells Halal meat write to the Chief Exec. I did.
Nearer home to avoid Halal meat, do NOT use takeaways operated by members of the Asian community.
