Letter: Don’t buy what you can’t afford

Ten years ago I was on minimum wage and my hubby unfortunately due to an accident became incapacitated for work but was then made redundant.

We had a child, mortgage and were entitled to no benefits apart from incapacity which he got about £60 per week.

The one thing I made sure of was that our bills were always paid and food on the table.

We had no loans, no credit cards, no £35 a month contract phones, we owed nothing.

We existed for three years, thats all. No holidays, no new clothes, gadgets, decorating.

Today we are in a better position but still believe if we can’t afford it then we don’t buy it. I still don’t have a contract phone. People need to prioritise better!

I'm sure you've cheered the masses up with that little tome.

The truth hurts. But I have to begrudgingly say that people needed a wake up call. As usual a lot of the poorer people who do live within their means will lose out again.
People who think that not having a contract phone makes them poor need to wake up and get a life.
many people in this country don't really know what poverty is.
