Letter: Menu rethink is food for thought

IS this a classic case of too many cooks? Yet again there is to be another improvement plan for school meals.

This time it is going to be by fast-food entrepreneur Henry Dimbleby and his business partner John Vincent who are shortly to embark on a fact finding tour of the nations schools.

Jamie Oliver has indicated he too wants to remain involved. In response to Jamie’s involvement last time, the Labour government set up the School Meals Trust. At the last count, this quango was gobbling up £60million a year. If recent history is anything to go by, I shudder to think what this latest review is going to cost us taxpayers.

Why T.V celebs think we will all benefit from their worldly expertise beats me. I am sure Jamie is a great guy,But we are talking common sense here. good wholesome food is what is needed not faddy calorie counted junk. then kids need to play out more or do a bit of sport, not rocket science. and we would save a fortune as well.

Unfortunately common sense went out the window when schoolmeals services were put in the hands of private companies who could make more money by serving kids rubbish.

This had been going on for years, but it was Jamie Oliver's intervention that got it publicity. Says more about us that we can't be bothered to look at problems until a celebrity stands next to them, than Mr Oliver who at least chose to stand next to a real problem
