The real scandal of the new ‘Welcome to Darwen’ signs is not that they are wrongly positioned (which they are – blurring the historic town boundary) or that they are tacky and hard to read (which they are – gold on red; give me strength) but that they have been knocked up by a firm in. . .Yorkshire.
Councillors might say they tried to get a local firm to do the job.
But if they did, they didn’t try hard enough.
Half-a-dozen local companies I know of would have taken it on – especially for the £4,500 they cost.
I have never been sure quite what Darwen Town Council actually does.
If this is an example of their support for the town, then it’s perhaps as well that they don’t do very much.
Harold Heys.
