IN response to the article headlined ‘Blackburn woman considers moving due to "danger ice corner", and the associated blogs around Michelle Traill’s dilemma, I wish to set the record straight.

Firstly, in the 13 years I have been resident on Oban Drive, I have never had a grit bin located outside my house. There is one on the corner of Largs Road and Oban Drive, to serve Oban, Largs and Troon.

This bin, more often than not, is empty due to kids upturning it on a frequent basis.

I too, live on a very dangerous corner, and in the past two winters have had to cancel caravan outings at Christmas due to the severe weather, and not being able to get the caravan off the drive.

I requested a grit bin on my corner a couple of years ago, and did not meet the criteria either.

Being a Councillor does not give me any priority for a grit bin outside my premises, and I have to cope along with everyone else with the meagre resources available.

I get through by buying a bag of grit and spreading it around the dangerous corner, and on to mine and fellow neighbours’ pavements and driveway entrances, and help clear elderly neighbours’ paths if needed.

Shadsworth with Whitebirk is often given a bad press, but in the eight years I have served my constituents, I have met some great people who care about the area, and try to work together.

If the resources aren’t available, then we need to help ourselves and our neighbours in these financially restrained times.

Coun Jim Shorrock, Chair, Policy and Corporate Resources Committee.
