SO ‘D’ DAY is fast approaching – from 0ctober 5 all shoppers will have to pay 5p for every carrier bag they use from retailers employing over 250 people full time. This is all well and good but will we be walking the streets as unpaid advertisers, as at present the bags display the shops’ logos?

I know some large retailers have always charged for bags and this has really annoyed me, why should we be advertising a store and at the same time be paying for the privilege.

I also wonder how it will work in supermarkets at the self service tills (another thing I don’t agree with as it puts people out of work). Will a member of staff be stood there making sure everyone pays their 5p? And what about the home delivery service provided by the large supermarket chains, I have seen these delivered in the stores’ plastic boxes and there have been loads of carrier bags – some with hardly anything in.

Ok, so we have to save the planet – but what about the overall cost to the consumer? Yet again another badly thought out proposal.
