Letter: Disabled people want to work

Disabled people want to work in jobs in all sectors, and good support and technology have made it possible (‘Row over Remploy closures,’ LT, July 19).

There are thousands of people, with significant experiences of disability, working in small and large businesses, at every level. But still many people are shut out.

The Access to Work programme supports 36,000 disabled people in mainstream jobs – but tens of thousands more would be in work if the budget grew.

The Government has agreed to make no cuts in the disability employment budget and to expand Access to Work.

For every £1 the Government spends on it, it returns nearly £1.50 in tax and National Insurance contributions. We should move on from separate factories for a small number of disabled people and look at the bigger picture – the aspirations of large numbers of disabled people for an equal chance to work.

Dream on, The truth is these companies get a subsidy to employ disabled people.
The Access to work programme is nothing more than a quango.
Disabled people can do a great job, If they can do the same job as a normal person why do the companies need a subsidy?
