Letter: Heroes set a great example

Britain has found a set of wonderful new sporting role models in our outstanding Olympic athletes.

What a contrast there is between our overpaid, under-achieving footballers and true world-beaters such as Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Lancashire’s own Steven Burke.

Moreover, let’s hope that the good example of our glorious Olympians can displace some of the celebrity culture that is having such a pernicious effect on young people in this country.

Just look at what can be achieved with hard work, team spirit and humility.

I feel that the national media must play a part too – by dropping their obsession with these ‘celebrity’ nobodies who have no particular talent or charisma.

Ken Marsden, Blackburn.

They are nothing like heroes . A term so overused nowadays . They are also no comparison to footballers . Footballers play week in week out and mid week too. They are up against another team not just single opponents.
Real heroes are those that fought in world wars that unfortunately every government i have known have crapped on.

Oh ! and most winners are from priviledged backgrounds and private schools with all the facilities needed.

Meanwhile labour sold off most of the comprehensive schools sports fields and so far the coilition have sold of 20 odd.

It,s called looking after the rich at the expense of the working man.

There is a mix up words here....there sportsmen/ women, professional sportsmen (it's usually men) celebrity sports persons....and then there's heroes.
All very different things, doing different things for different amounts of money.
Somehow they've been conflated in the 'dumbing down' of news and commentary into being the same thing...and they're not.
And by the way....not all top athletes are from monied backgrounds....and I think you're insulting the parents and families of those that have done it the hard way by lumping everyone together.
I do agree that the selling off off of sports fields was a disgrace and it is still ongoing.
Ironic given the gov's and 'Hi; folks,It's Boris's' call for more sports in schools. Check out Private Eye...it's an ongoing theme there.
