Letter: Eat less and exercise more!

Much of the problem of obesity is down to diet, lack of exercise and, in a few cases, lack of understanding (‘Obesity crisis in East Lancashire,’ LT, August 6).

In the depression years of the 1930s obesity wasn't a problem despite the diet of people being stodgy because people walked everywhere and did manual jobs.

Today many people travel by car and have little in the way of exercise - a walk of three miles being a challenge.

Added to all this is the culpability of the food manufacturers who continue to add too much sugar to their products as well as producing larger sizes of chocolate bars etc - 'family size' being the selling angle but really meaning more of the same. And then there is all the fast food on sale with its high sugar, salt and fat content.

The rise of the 'blob' population will continue until government legislates and takes the food industry head on. But, of course, who gives large donations to the Tory Party - yes, you can guess!
