Letter: Faith rallies the oppressed

Karl Marx’s view of religion was rather more subtle than rhgraham1947 says (LT, August 4) Marx didn't only say, "religion is the opium of the people", he also called it "the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world and the soul of soulless conditions".

While it is true that for Christianity Britain is a post-religious society, Islam is on the rise.

It is entirely understandable that with the barbarous assaults by the imperialist powers on the Islamic countries the Muslim people have rallied to their faith as never before. For resisting they have been called terrorists, tortured and imprisoned. For them their religion is truly the heart of a heartless world.

But religion has its limit. In Egypt the Muslim Brotherhood was swept to power on a wave of popular unrest but already the new president Mohamed Mursi is collaborating with the military, the US and Israel to thwart the aspirations of the masses.

It is time for them to cast off the shackles of their religious leaders, seize power for themselves, open the Rafa crossing to Gaza and turn the Arab Spring into an Arab Summer.
