Letter: Tighten up on waste permits

As restrictions are imposed on the size and number of landfill sites around the country are tightened, we can expect to see more of these recycling or industrial waste storage facilities being created.

Thus it would be an ideal opportunity for local councils to tighten up on the permits that are issued.

For instance, when a proposed site is set up, a limit on both the volume and time that any quantity is stored on site, with a review written into the permit.

The permit should also include a fixed period of time for clearance of the site, should any permit holder fail to comply, also a per diem penalty that would offset any cost of council removal.
