Letter: What I learn from school figures...

The number of permanently excluded pupils was 34 in 473 schools. The number suspended for just one day was 322 in 473 schools.

So over 90% of schools never had to permanently exclude a pupil. And over a third of schools never had to even exclude a pupil for one day in an entire year.

This hardly suggests a breakdown in discipline.

Excluded again (via website).

We don't know from this letter how these cases are distributed among the schools, so the calculation misleads us. Every case involves a breakdown of discipline, and if most of these cases appear in just a few of the schools then we would be tempted to think that a serious breakdown had occurred.

That is a possibility becasue, as you say, we don't habe a breakdown in the figures.

But, if what you suggest is the case, there is no general breakdown in discipline in schools - there are some specific problems in some specific schools. It is a problem in specific schools, not a problem in wider society.

The original story, which my post was a respone to, suggested that there was a general breakdown in discipline across all schools. Clearly the figures do not show this - whichever way you cut it.

Yeah, got it. You posted comment and the paper used part of it as a letter. Your full post is better. I'm new to this business.
