Putting things on hills has been a British tradition since pre-history – some Iron Age white horses remain carved into hillsides.
There’s a photo in the archives of Darwen Library showing a demonstration in Darwen Town Centre against the proposal to build Darwen Tower –
because it would spoil the natural beauty of the moor!
