Letter: Police should be making arrests

‘Police campaign targets Blackburn prostitutes’ (LT, July 23) really means we are speaking with them and their customers and giving them advice on how to be safe.

Why aren’t the police arresting them and putting them before a court so they can be named and shamed in the press?

Arresting "them" (who are "them"?) for what offense?

They call them ''sex workers''.
in reality , these people are victims. no one would do that job unless they were desperate.
they need help and advice , whether that is to get off drugs , or to sort out their finances , or whatever.
flogging , shooting etc is not the answer.
remember the 5 prostitutes who were murdered ? that caused the authorities to DO something positive about the problem . most if not all got their life back on track.

I'm of the other persuasion, live and let live. If someone makes the decision to sell their body, whom am I to judge them or the person that avails themselves of it?
If we lived in a more honest and open, less bigoted society, we would realise that there is a need of these services. It's of biblical age and has yet to be stopped by anyone, let alone God, as in Ezekiel 23, where it's promised for them, cups of woe..

Why is it illegal here, yet acceptable in other countries?

Most of these women are on drugs or drink. They sell their bodies to maintain the lifestyle they have gone into . To arrest them would achieve absolutely nothing . They may get fined but would then go back out on the streets to pay the fine . A prison sentence would only be short term and as we all know drugs can be obtained in most prisons.
Prostitution is the worlds oldest profession and has never been stopped .
The answer is to legalise it and have brothels .

If you resort to paid-for sex then you failed GCSE Humanity. Ask for whatever you want and ye shall receive, I think it says in the Bible.

The last government made all offences arrestable and also made thousands of new laws, so there's very little for officers to consider before deciding to arrest. Perhaps 'do I have enough officers not on the sick?' would be an important consideration.
