Letter: Roadworks madness
2:42pm Friday 20th July 2012 in Opinion
Is there anyone in charge of scheduling of when and where roadworks take place?
Who in their right minds would sanction the widening of the bridge at the end of Greenbank Terrace/Lower Eccleshill Road, at the same time as allowing the replacement of the gas mains on the A666 between Lynwood and Hollins Grove, with both sets of roadworks having traffic light control?
These are two heavily used routes between Blackburn and Darwen. The ensuing queues at rush hour are absolutely horrendous and Lord knows how many people are now late for work who use their cars or the local bus service.
This scheduling is absolutely ridiculous, as neither of these are five- minute jobs but major undertakings.
Someone’s head should roll for such sheer incompetence.
Malcolm Bury, Elswick Street, Darwen.

This used to be a Council responsibility, but it was removed by the Thatcher government when they privatised the utilities. They didn't want 'inefficient Councils' holding back 'efficient private companies' by making them plan and co-ordinate their roadworks.
So the electric, gas and water companies can dig up the roads when and where they like. They are meant to inform the Council, but there are no penalties if they can't be bothered.
