Championship trip for Bacup kickboxing champ

A TEENAGE kickboxing sensation is heading to the World Championships — partly thanks to county council grant.

Ryan Grenfell, 13, is now in full training for this October’s event, which takes place in Montreal in Canada.

The Bacup lad received a £500 donation towards his trip thanks to Lancashire's champion for young people, County Councillor Mark Perks.

Ryan qualified for the tournament after winning a British event earlier this year.

He said: “I am really pleased to have been awarded this grant.

“I will be trying my best to win. I'd like to thank everyone for their help.”

Coun Perks said: “Ryan is a fantastic example to other young people. He has excelled in his sport and I'm pleased to provide this much-needed funding that will help him to realise his dream.

“He's a superb role model for other young people. I hope his success encourages others to take part in sport - and puts Bacup on the map.”
