Letter: Walking all over us

REGARDING the article ‘Town asylum seekers could double’, (LT, June 28), why oh why is the government not putting a block on anymore asylum seekers entering the country?

Don’t we have enough problems?

Not to mention those who commit crimes and don’t get sent back home.

We have no industry left as such, because it can be done cheaper abroad, and we are in a double-dip recession.

Various benefits are being cut, plus we have a growing army of jobseekers.

This country is far too soft and lets the rest of the world walk all over it.

The priorities are all wrong. Until a government puts its foot down and makes changes, Britain will end up at rock bottom.

We have not got a never-ending money pot.

B Nightingale (Mr), Accrington.

As an island surrounded by safe countries should we have asylum seekers at all ? We have no jobs / no money / a failing health service / our own pensioners suffering etc etc and yet more are being let in daily. On some occassions families of ten that will not be working and will be a total burden . Just who lets them in ?
We should stop all asylum and have a very similar immigration policy to Australia.

Asylum seekers and genuine refugees are a miniscule amount of people. the illegal immigrants are the problem. the mass influx from eastern Europe legals as fellow E.U members have all been mixed together for media purposes, There were misquoted figures used by the media to hype up a problem way beyond the reality of the situation.
The truth is most of the immigrants into Britain are legally allowed to be here, We have to ask the question of the employers and agencies who are exploiting these workers. the minimum wage is not a target to drive wages down to, I have no problem with anybody trying to better themselves and their family in another country. Brits have migrated all over the world for work. The illegals should never have got past the port of entry, why or how did they get in? Asylum seekers in recent years have come from countries we as part of the NATO coalition have decided to bomb and change the regime.
Remember Kosovo, Serbia, Iraq, And Afghanistan. many of these people were genuinely in fear of their lives. Asylum in it's true form is a great act of compassion. I know there are other countries nearer, they have taken their share, in fact a few more than the media care to report. But we have to take our share. I have noticed that the figures of people returning to their home country are lacking. I do think there is another agenda here.
While we are a member of the club we have to abide by the rules. we need a vote to decide on our future relationship with the E.U, I was happy with the common market but not any further integration. So aim your concerns at the right target.

More and more I am getting the feeling that this country is like France was before the revolution where the aristocracy rode roughshod (literally and physically) over the peasants. Today, our political masters have replaced the aristocracy.

Compassion isn't controlled by a tap!!
.
I feel that this is going to be another thred where the selfish cowards, who are so fearful that the slight advantage that they have is going to be undermined by hard working immigrants, (with more skills and better job prospects) will come forth.
.
Remember you are only where you are due to a stroke of good fortune not because you have done anything to deserve it.
