Blog: Death makes money
MY mum announced that she and my dad had paid for and finalised their funeral arrangements and picked out their coffins.
But as morbid as it may sound – I can appreciate their forward-thinking for something that will happen to us all later rather than sooner!
But although my parents aren’t ready to ‘pop their clogs’ anytime soon, it was a practical conversation about death - in that they don’t want to leave their children with a funeral bill.
But after discovering that the funeral was booked with the Co-operative Funeralcare, I was even more mortified than when the conversation first started.
For anyone who watched Dispatches - Undercover Undertaker on Channel 4 you will know what I mean.
An undercover journalist saw dozens of naked, dead bodies piled up on top of each other, whilst relatives were made to think their loved ones were at peace.
I would hate for my family to be treated like that and just couldn’t believe what I was seeing with mourners being sold more expensive packages to boost company profits.
Now the funeral company has apologised and launched an investigation into the disrespectful way the bodies were treated.
But for me, looking at the footage of pure carnage – and at what really goes on with the deceased, it’s sad to say that along with births and marriages - death for some people seems to be a money-making business.
