Letter: Lack of respect over graveyards
4:37pm Thursday 5th July 2012 in Opinion
Has Blackburn with Darwen Council given away its lawn mowers? It’s bad enough seeing overgrown roadside vegetation and grass verges but there’s a total lack of respect when it comes to graveyards.
Even worse, when you read that Pte Pitts (LT, July 2) worked for the council for over three decades after leaving the Forces.
He clearly achieved a lot more than many of the self serving and self promoting politicians we are stuck with today.
How much would it cost to send in someone with a petrol strimmer once a month over the growing season? I’m guessing multiply by ten what any other reasonable person would pay once the council’s red tape has been added.
Should anyone fall over or slip in the graveyard, then the council will be liable and the costs of any claim will far outweigh those of sending someone out to cut back the vegetation. Easier, though, for the council to bleat on about austerity measures and make big visible shows of how broke they are – yet they are happy to spend on their modern art and the like.

Grindleton Bob has to accept that at the last General Election the folk voting Conservative voted in favour of these huge cutbacks. The Tories made no secret that they would cut services severely.
Unfortunately we are now stuck with these cutbacks until 2015. If folk want more grass cutting in cemeteries the solution is staring you in the face. Unfortunately those voting Lib-Dem were conned into thinking that the cuts would not affect them ! But then Clegg decided to throw his lot into the Tory camp.....
