Letter: Cigarette rule just a bandwagon

Banning smoking is a populist bandwagon for lazy politicians to hop on.

I wonder how high on the list of priorities this issue is on ordinary people’s agenda?

I wonder where the replacement revenue will come from when everyone gives up smoking, drinking, and eating the wrong foods.

As for driving, they have already realised the shortfall in road-fund licence revenue is far more than anticipated from ‘green’ cars, so how are they going to screw the motorist? I feel pay-per-mile coming on.

The misguided policies of local councilors and green lobbyists have been seriously ill-considered. People are under enough pressure as it is.

I do fear that these people who will not face a debate will continue to get their way as ordinary, sensible people do not challenge them.

Local councilors should at this time be proactive in trying to get some decent companies and decent jobs into their borough. Leave the petty pet projects alone, it is not the councils’ place to dictate to the ratepayers.

Amending the smoking ban will increase the number of people drinking in pubs and clubs. This would not only get more people in jobs but would also increase the revenue to the Government.

Looks like the anti-smoking bandwagon is meeting its end! A law nobody wanted,a law that cost 200,000 hospitality jobs and closed 30,000 pubs and other venues.......All based upon the mythology of second hand smoke!!!!!!

I sincerely hope that there will never be a repeal of the smoking ban. Times have moved on. As an ex smoker, who, incidentally, will defend anyones right to smoke, I never realised just how much cigarette smoke, and smokers, stank! Yes, and that would include me back then. In fact I abhor walking into a pub now, if it means that I have to pass a gaggle of smokers huddled round the front door. Seriously folks, you really do stink to high heaven! God forbid that bars and clubs should go back to smelling of stale ashtrays. Sorry folks, but thats the way it is, so no, the law should never be repealed.
