Letter: Money is what drives politics

Re the letter about when Labour will begin to live in the real world (LT, June 20), politicians are out to make as much money as possible while still in power.

The LibDems and the Tories knew they would be out of office in a few years , but took the money anyway.

The trick is to get re-elected, which relies on Labour doing worse, which is possible because they are all apparatchiks.

An amusing description and worryingly close to the truth. At the risk of sounding 'ageist' I cannot help wondering whether a lot of our political problems today are due to the youth & inexperience of our politicians & their advisers.

How can people with limited life experience be expected to see the whole picture on any issue?. They keep re-inventing the wheel on some issues because there is no-one left who remembers that all these things have been tried & failed in the past.

Taxpayers money is thrown at issues which THEY regard as important but the vast majority, even at very local levels such as the local Council, come from backgrounds where salaries are comfortable.

How can such people have any perception of the needs and aspirations of 'normal working people' and what gives them the right to impose their standards, ideals & expectations on those of us struggling just to keep 'body & soul together'.

Come on all you politicians & senior Civil Servants , get out from behind your desks & out of your expensive cars, take a look at the real world. Perhaps a couple of years in the Military or working in a factory might help you decide what is really important in life!
