Letter: Dodgy forecasts in the long term

WE’RE told by a local weather expert that East Lancashire is experiencing higher than average levels of rainfall this summer (LT, June 18).

Look at the national weather centre’s predictions for the summer posted in March!

They couldn’t get it right for a few months in advance, yet they subscribe to the view that in 50million years will die due to global warming and we need to stifle our economy with green taxes and build useless, heavily-subsidised windmills everywhere.

You couldn't make it up.

Weather is short term variations. Climate is long term trends. It is easier to predict long term trends than short term specific events.

I confidentantly predict that Manchester City will finish near the top of the Premier League next season and that Southampton will finish near the bottom. But I can't confidently predict the results of the games between Manchester City and Southampton - a freak result is always possible.

Another 'freak result' prediction reported today; fire, earth and air are to take turns along with water in falling from the sky.
