Comment: A race truly worth celebrating

LAST night, thousands of women put on their running shoes to go the extra mile for charity.

The Race for Life is one of the most inspirational events of the year.

This is not an athletic challenge for the region’s top runners but a chance for every last competitor to push themselves in return for sponsorship.

Raising money for Cancer Research, the runners all tell tales of survival or of family members in memory of whom they are running.

It is called the Race for Life but even though there is a winner, every participant should be celebrated.

Many of those taking part have never done any kind of organised run before and the women-only regulations mean that most feel more comfortable having a go.

The numbers involved are the envy of other charity challenges with thousands taking part whenever they are held.

The Blackburn event is turning into an annual highlight due to the large numbers.

The race is a positive occasion for everyone to achieve something significant.
