Letter: Backing down on marriage threat

I have a really cool friend named Dana.

She received a card in the post from a local politician in Bedford, Indiana, USA, that read - Gay marriage is a threat to traditional marriage!

She called him and said, “I've been happily married to my husband for six years. How do you figure that two gay guys getting married is a threat to our marriage?”

He tried to backpedal and said, "Well, maybe not your marriage specifically."

She said, “Oh no, that's what you said! You said gay marriage is a threat to our marriage! That's what it says right here on this card!” He had to back down.

The local politician was right (only in sofar as) - his card said "Gay marriage is a threat to traditional marriage! not to their marriage per se.

Why is it a threat? It is no more a threat to "traditional marriage" as a civil marriage ceremony held in a hotel is.
.
There is no claim that the gays want religious institutions to be forced to marry people of the same sex; just that the civil ceremony part be equally available to both hetero and homosexuals.
.
Not that there is a disparity in that straight couples cannot have a civil partnership, even if they wanted to. Why is that do you think?
