IT is a great achievement for an East Lancashire dancer to make it into a prestigious academy — but to have her pick of several, Leona Lawrenson must be oozing talent.

The 16-year-old, of Feniscowles, has won a scholarship at the Bird College in Kent after turning down placements at top stage schools including the Italia Conti and The Urdang Academy.

Leona, a former St Wilfrid’s pupil, will study dance for three years and hopes for a professional career in musical theatre. She will be following in the footsteps of Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm and Spooks and Sherlock star Lara Pulver.

Leona’s achievement is an inspiration to other East Lancashire youngsters dreaming of following in a similar career path.

Over recent years, dozens of respected dance, drama and acting schools have opened up on our high streets, helping promising young stars achieve their ambitions.

East Lancashire boasts a wealth of celebrity talent including Jane Horrocks, John Simm, Anthony Cotton, Diana Vickers and X Factor sensation Reece Bibby, many of whom started out in local drama clubs.

So come on East Lancashire — toast Leona’s success and encourage like-minded youngsters to take their ambitions seriously.
