Mount Pleasant Elizabeth Semillon 2013, £13.99, slurp.co.uk

Summer drinking means white wines and here’s one made with a golden grape, Semillon, that began life in south western France but is now best known for having wonders worked on it in Australia’s Hunter Valley. It’s intense, bursting with lime and other citrus and also available eight years older for £14.95. Not cheap but seriously good.

Vignobles Roussellet Pinot Noir, £4.39, Aldi

In a completely different price and flavour league is this workaday French red which is best served slightly chilled to sup around the barbecue with sausages, steaks or whatever. There’s nothing layered or too subtle about this style of Pinot Noir – but it is extremely tasty, absolutely astonishing value and worth stocking up on.
