THE government seems keen to apply democracy to our trade union movement, by having 50 per cent support of the total membership in order to take strike action.

Why does this not apply to the government itself? It is a disgrace this government has come to power with only 24.3 per cent of the total electorate’s votes!

For the past 40 years similarly elected governments have come to power on such low percentages and carried out policies people don’t want.

The poll tax, Iraq war, health service, education, immigration and the proposed (not needed) extravagance of HS2 rail are just a few examples of the damage we have had to put up with.

No government should take power unless it has a mandate from at least 50 per cent of the total electorate.

Then we might get something approaching true democracy and not the double standards we are having inflicted upon us.
