TODAY is set to be the hottest day of the year so far.

The thermometer is set to reach up to 29C in East Lancashire prompting health bosses to warn those at risk to take precautions.

Top tips for staying safe in the heat include looking out for others especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children and babies and those with serious illnesses.

No-one should be left in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals.

People should also try to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm and if you have to go out in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat.

Vulnerable people, including those with respiratory conditions, should also avoid physical exertion, wear light, loose fitting cotton clothes and drink plenty of cold drinks.

If it gets uncomfortably hot indoors, experts advise trying to keep your bedroom and living space cool, by closing the curtains on windows that receive the sun and opening your windows at cooler times of the day and overnight when safe to do so.

Meanwhile, despite the high temperatures, forecasters are also warning of the possibility of isolated heavy thunderstorms .
