THERE was more good news for East Lancashire’s economy yesterday with the opening of bakery firm Warburton’s new £20 million facility.

The expansion will allow the company to produce its new range of wraps and ‘Thins’.

The new line has created 60 more jobs at the company’s Burnley factory, bringing the total workforce up to 260.

And even better news — a space has already been earmarked for a new production unit which would see an even bigger expansion.

Warburton’s is a real local success story.

Based in Bolton, the family owned firm was started in 1876 and says its ‘heart and soul’ are in Lancashire.

It now has 12 bakeries across the UK and is the most successful UK-based brand in the country.

Its new 100-metre long plant, adjacent to the existing bakery in Billington Road, will produce 33,400 items per hour.

The move comes hot on the heels of the announcement that Extertis is to create 300 new jobs with a move to the Burnley Bridge business park.

The firm already employs 400 workers at its Altham site, and chose to stay in the area rather than relocate elsewhere.

Let us hope in the months ahead that there is even more good news to come.
