PETER Goble knows only too well how important mountain rescue teams can be.

The paramedic once fell 45 feet down a cave after abseiling with equipment that wasn’t fit for purpose.

He broke several bones and suffered a back injury which still troubles him to this day.

He said he felt he owed the mountain rescue team that helped him get to hospital massively.

In fact, he was so indebted he decided that joining his local team was the only way he could repay them.

Fifteen years later, he has now made his way through the ranks of Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team, actually becoming its leader three years ago.

Peter is a great example of using his skills to help other people.

As well as rescuing injured people stranded on the moors of East Lancashire, he has also helped conduct searches for missing people and those who have become lost.

All the time he spends with the service is voluntary and unpaid. In fact, it can actually cost volunteers to be part of the team because they pay their own travel expenses.

It is brilliant to know that should the worst ever happen, there are people like Peter out there looking out for all of us.
