Chablis 2013, £8.99, Lidl

Chablis is the classic French white made with Chardonnay grapes in the Burgundy region – and just as with red Burgundy wine the sky is the limit with prices.

This one however is a light, refreshing and enjoyable example at a very reasonable price complete with that increasingly rare component – a cork rather than screw top.

La Croix Des Celestins Fleurie 2013, £6.49, Lidl

Another French classic is Fleurie, usually the most expensive example of Beaujolais which is made with Gamay grapes. Here, from the same ‘discount’ supermarket’s range, is a bargain red which is light enough to taste best slightly chilled.

The printed label is barely readable but the contents certainly make up for that.
